Can Arsenal really compete for this Barcelona superstar?

PedroEvery season, there’s always one Barcelona player who finds his way onto the periphery of the squad and starts courting attention from other clubs. Last season that man was Alexis Sanchez (and to some extent, Alex Song), this year, it’s winger/forward, Pedro.

He may have been at the Nou Camp since 2008, but he’s often found himself high and dry this season. Many of this year’s 18 appearances have come as a substitute, as he’s gradually found himself forced out due to the presence of Neymar and the rise to prominence of Alexis Sanchez (he’s turned things around pretty nicely). He’s only made Barca’s starting eleven on one occasion in the Champions League and has had limited exposure in La Liga.

At 26-years-old, he should be at the peak of fitness, talent and ability. That’s why it’s so disappointing to see him get squeezed out. New Barca boss Gerardo Martino just doesn’t seem to have the same level of interest in the talented Spaniard as previous coaches have.

Luckily, he does have a lifeline. According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are monitoring the situation and  may make a move for him during the upcoming transfer window. It’s also suggested that Pedro could be willing to hand in a transfer request in order to force through a move.

I can’t help but feel that this would be a good move for both club and player. Pedro needs a change of scenery and Arsenal need somebody who can provide them with some threat moving down the wings.

In the absence of Theo Walcott, Arsenal have lacked cut and thrust going forward. Olivier Giroud is a lot of things, but he’s not pacey and he’s not super effective when the ball goes over the top. It’s unfortunate that both Theo and Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain got injured at the same time, but it has revealed a weakness within the Gunners squad.

Pedro is a world-class footballer who has played a key role for the Spanish international team. During his time at Barcelona, he’s found the back of the net 72 times. That’s a fairly good return. He’d be a signing who would further Arsenal’s reputation as a club who can attract top talent.

There’s no word as to how much he might cost, but I hope Arsenal are able to stump up the cash.

What’s your take? Should the Gunners attempt to sign Barcelona hero, Pedro?
