Why I’d love to see Tottenham go in for this Serie A superstar:

Last year, AC Milan forward, Stephan El Shaarawy found himself on The Guardian’s list of the top 100 footballers in the world. He placed 52nd.

That’s quite remarkable for a player who is just 20-years-old. He’s also managed to get on the Italian cover of FIFA 14, standing proud alongside Lionel Messi. His standing in the game, at such a young age, is a thing to marvel at.

His versatility is certainly appealing. Whilst he typically plays as a left winger, he’s also effective as an attacking midfielder, or even as a centre-forward.

What’s most impressive about El Shaarawy, is his dribbling ability, his willingness to take players on and his quick, tricky feet.  When he’s on form, he’s extremely exciting to watch, as he’s so direct and he has plenty of end product.

He’s one of those players who play as though the ball is glued to their feet.

Last season, he really came to prominence, scoring 19 goals in 46 games, establishing himself as a regular first-teamer in the process. This year, he’s made 4 appearances and has scored once.

But his place at the San Siro could well be under threat. According to The Star, Kaka’s return to Milan could well force Shaarawy out of the club. It’s thought that Milan may have to cash in on the Italian youngster, in order to make ends meet.

I have to say, I find this difficult to believe. Why would Milan have re-signed Kaka, if it meant putting one of their brightest sparks out to pasture? It just doesn’t make sense.

But if El Shaarawy is available, he’s likely to attract plenty of attention. The Star even suggest that Tottenham could be in the running.

Spurs have made a number of exciting additions over the last few months, but signing  Stephan El Shaarawy would likely beat them all.

With Roberto Soldado adapting slowly to the Premier League, bringing in another forward would make plenty of sense. This is especially true given the fact that both players offer distinct playing styles. It’s easy enough to see them forming a viable partnership together.

Despite this, the deal must surely be some way off. El Shaarawy won’t come cheap and Spurs have already spent a lot of money over the last few months.

But if Andre Villas-Boas can pull off a deal of this magnitude during the January transfer window, then who knows what Spurs can achieve?
