Should Manchester United move in for this former Arsenal star?

Alex SongWhat a wild year or so former Arsenal star Alex Song has had. The Barcelona man got to make a dream move to Barcelona, but has completely failed to make his mark at the Nou Camp.

As a result he’s been linked to a number of different clubs, including Arsenal (Wenger’s response: “My personalĀ adviceĀ for him would be to give it another go and after two seasons he can still make a decision”). Now, according to The Star, Alex Song could be on his way to join Manchester United during the January transfer window.

Wait, what?

Let’s rewind a bit. Let’s start by looking at the kind of player Song was at Arsenal and the role he’s currently taking up at Barcelona.

Signed on the cheap, Arsene Wenger developed Song from an untidy, scrappy midfielder into a world-class defensive midfielder. Unfortunately, the Professor was never able to instill any discipline or organisational skills within the Cameroonian international.

He often made marauding runs forward, exposing Arsenal’s back-four and creating space that opponents could attack. Whilst this added to he Gunners potency moving forward, it made him an ineffective defensive unit.

Song was also a quiet man, rarely undergoing interviews and commonly pictured with his big headphones on.

As such, fans weren’t too disappointed to see him move to La Liga last summer. At the time, however, the move did seem a little queer. How would Song fare when he was competing with the likes of Sergio Busquets and Javier Mascherano?

Not very well apparently. Song has spent much of his time at the Nou Camp warming the bench. Barca must have been attracted by his ability to combine tough-tackling, with attacking flair, but really don’t have a need for him within their squad.

But if Song’s move to Spain was strange, imagine how odd it would be to see him move to Manchester United.

Whilst I don’t feel that he owes any loyalty to Arsenal, it’s difficult to picture him in a Manchester United shirt.

Especially as United have just signed Marouane Fellaini. The big Belgium player has a similar playing style, but is both more physically imposing, stronger in the air and more technically gifted.

Maybe the best thing for Song would be to heed Wenger’s advice and play out another year with Barcelona. If he hasn’t made it in Spain, he can then consider making a career-saving step down. I just don’t think that a move to United is on the cards.

What’s your take? Can you picture Alex Song moving to Manchester United?
