Ciprian MaricaAs things currently stand, Arsenal are sitting pretty at the top of the season. I’m sure even the most optimistic fan wouldn’t have expected their club to get off to such a flying start.

Whilst they are yet to face any big challenges, they have beaten everybody that’s been placed in front of them (with Aston Villa being the exception). This is largely down to the form of Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey, alongside the confidence and goodwill that the arrival of Mesut Ozil has spread throughout the club.

But Arsenal fans have to ask themselves the following question: what happens if Olivier Giroud picks up an injury? What happens if he stops scoring? The unfortunate answer is that the Gunners just don’t have enough options upfront. Arsenal should be able to call upon better players than Nicklas Bendtner and Yaya Sanogo (who’s still too raw a talent).

Spurs are currently in a similar position. Whilst they did go out and buy a striker this summer (Roberto Soldado), the Spaniard isn’t exactly firing on all cylinders. They’re also missing the firepower that Gareth Bale brought them.

I think it’s fair to say that both Arsene Wenger and Andre Villas-Boas wished that they had one more decent striker in their squad.

That’s why the battle over Ciprian Marica is so interesting. The Romanian wanderer has just been let go by Schalke 04 and is now a free agent, currently looking for a home.

According to The Mirror, Tottenham are in pole position to sign the 28-year-old, who is willing to snub the advances of Arsenal (and West Ham) in order to make a move to White Hart Lane.

That’s good news for Spurs.

Marica is a striker/winger, who’s excelled for his country (22 goals in 60 appearances) and impressed at club level, playing for outlets like Shakhtar Donetsk and Stuttgart.

He’s never been a prolific goal-scorer, but that’s largely because he’s often played out on the wings. Indeed, this versatility may serve him well at a club like Tottenham.

He’d provide Spurs with a valuable, much-needed option upfront. This makes me wonder why Arsenal haven’t gone in harder for the Romanian. Surely he’d jump at the opportunity to join the Gunners?

Arsene Wenger is letting a big opportunity slip through his hands. I just hope it doesn’t come back to bite him when the Gunners are struggling for goals later this season.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal battle it out with Spurs to sign Ciprian Marica?
