Could Tottenham be about to serve a £30m slice of transfer revenge?

Juan MataFollowing a superb summer of transfer activity by Spurs, the club must have been sorely disappointed to have missed out on a key target last week.

They’d been trailing Willian, a £30m Brazilian ace for a number of days, had agreed terms with Anzhi and the player had passed a medical at White Hart Lane. But soon after, Chelsea crashed their party, agreed terms with the player and snapped him away from Tottenham’s grip.

It was the first time this summer that Spurs were bested in the transfer market. But Andre Villas-Boas could yet get his own back.

I can’t help but wonder if Jose Mourinho moved in for Willian because he started to view Tottenham as a threat. The Blues midfield is already over-stuffed with fantastically gifted midfielders. Signing another Brazilian play-maker wasn’t exactly necessary.

Unless it was a means by which Chelsea curtailed Tottenham’s attempts to advance up the Premier League this summer. Chelsea threw a spanner into Tottenham’s well-oiled transfer machine in attempt to end the club’s advances.

But it could all back-fire for Jose Mourinho. According to The Star, Spurs are convinced that Chelsea star, Juan Mata, is interested in moving to White Hart Lane.

Wouldn’t that be quite something? I can’t help but feel that Juan Mata is an improvement on Willian and if Spurs can persuade the Blues to sell and Mata to take a step down, they could pull off a real coup.

Unfortunately for Spurs, it’s clear enough that Jose Mourinho views Andre Villas-Boas as a threat. Though he doesn’t seem to rate Juan Mata as highly as everybody else, he won’t want to let a player of that level of quality leave his club to join a rival.

Still, given the Gareth Bale situation, Tottenham could have enough money to force a deal into existence. The Star suggests that Daniel Levy will sanction a £30m move for Juan Mata.

Whether this would be enough is unclear. It should certainly give Jose Mourinho pause for thought.

Signing a player like Juan Mata would revolutionise Tottenham’s midfield and would surely elevate the club back up into a Champions League position. In that sense, Mata could end up paying for himself.

This looks like a tough deal to engineer, but Tottenham’s top-brass has already pulled off a few transfer miracles this summer. Let’s hope they do it again!

What’s your take? Could Juan Mata really make a move to Tottenham?

i’d love it… & it’d be karma for the way spurs lost out on Willian, however i just cannot see it happening… too many obstacles.

Harry, only in our DREAMS! Do u think Chelski is stupid enough to sell Juan Mata to us after they have stolen Willian from us. Tell them to fxxk off especially their sugar daddy and get the hell out of our sight!

Mata is just about the best player in the league. The next best thing to us getting him, is for him to be unsettled (and, therefore, less effective) at his present club. Willian’s arrival and Mourinho’s weird selections have certainly ensured that!

I would like to see damiao with the 30million we will have left. Nice last day purchase I reckon.

I agree that the move for Willian was to scupper Spurs inexorable move to the title. With Willian we were a dead cert for the title as he can unlock the teams who “park the bus” like Chelsea and Stoke. That’s why I don’t think Mata is on his way to us either. However that doesn’t Mata (joke) as our new No 10 is a pretty class act himself and reminds me a lot of Ortega. Lamella is Argentinian and they are always fantastic for us (Ardilles, Villa). And also good luck to Bale – don’t make any mistake – he carried the team last year and I loved watching this guy. I’ll probably become a Madrid fan as well now just to see how he’s getting on. Thanks for everything Gareth and good luck.

This article is seriously flawed. You suggest that CFC bought Willian to prevent Spurs getting better. So why sell them Mata which would see Spurs getting better??? Nuts.
