BernardIt’s typical of Arsenal’s summer thus far, that speculation surrounding players like Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez appears to be dying down, whilst speculation concerning Brazilian youngster Bernard, increases.

Despite having signed some excellent commercial deals, cutting the deadwood (goodbye to the likes of Sebastien Squillaci, Denilson, Andre Santos, Andrei Arshavin and more!), the Gunners have been an impotent force this summer. Arsene Wenger should be flush with cash, instead he’s been as cautious as ever.

Some may say that the Gunners’ bids for Luis Suarez, is evidence that Arsenal have shown some ambition, but I’d argue otherwise. Arsene Wenger must have known that Liverpool would never agree to those terms. The bid seems to have been nothing more than a PR stunt, designed to help keep impatient Arsenal fans at bay.

Not that there’s anything wrong in and of itself, when it comes to Arsenal targeting Atletico Mineiro forward, Bernard. It’s just the circumstances surrounding the news that are a cause of frustration.

Still, Bernard could be an important signing for Arsenal, even if he might struggle to make an immediate impact in the Premier League.

The Mirror recently ran a story suggesting that Bernard had refused ‘to rule out Gunners transfer talk’. They based this story on the following quote:

“In a week as important as this one, I do not wanna talk about it [Arsenal’s interest]. I want to talk about the game,I do not want to be rude or ignorant to anyone. I want to talk about the game.”

So yes, he didn’t rule it out, but he also didn’t give any kind of hint either way. Who knows what the future holds for the young lad?

Where ever he ends up, there’s a good chance that he’ll leave his mark. The left-sided midfielder is full of vim and vigour. He’s a quick thinker and he has the skills and technical ability to make mincemeat out of defenders. That’s surely why Atletico have turned down a £9.8m deal for the youngster in the past.

If Arsenal want him, they’ll have to spend a fair amount of money. Any such move would be testament to the youngster’s development and potential.

At Arsenal, he’d be able to play first team games in the Carling Cup and early rounds of the FA Cup. Who’d bet against him becoming a regular in the side after a couple of years time?

I’m sure fans would rather see Arsene Wenger chasing a marquee signing, but that doesn’t mean Bernard would be a bad addition to the squad. It’s certainly worth remaining open-minded about this one.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Arsenal go in for Bernard?

So when Liverpool is interested, he is worth 20m, Arsenal is interested, his valuation drops to 9.8m?

My take on this one is that he is ok. just ok.
    poor mans Marko Marin
    5M maybe.

    • GaryH says:

No one can be a poor man’s Marko Marin, he is simply an aweful athelete with no stamina or determination.

Bernard is genuinely two-footed and can play anywhere along the line behind the striker. Watching his highlights he scored with both feet and some nice headers dispite being on 5ft 5” tall. He scored excellent balance and pace on the run/dribbling with nice passing ability.

My only concern is that he is small and would be targeted. If he can go a few years injury free he can become world class. He reminds me of Mata or a young Messi, obviously not at their levels yet though.

i want Arsenal to sign him because he is better than the likes of Gervinho and he is still young. He is blessed with great talent and i call him the young KaKa

I can’t see us spending 21m on any player, for him not to be ready for 2 years is quite frankly a (joke).

Why would Arsenal bid £40m for a PR stunt? His clause has been activiated, meaning that Arsenal can talk to him and offer terms. If he accepts the terms, then Liverpool have an unhappy player on their books, and as an Arsenal fan we know exactly how that ends up working out…

Are u for real? PR stunt? Typical journalist ! Nothing but frivourlous comments and no solid concrete evidence as all the newspapers are because they have nothing else to print!

  • CorkGunner says:

Why would you think that a player who played a central role in a winning Copa Libertadores team is only ready for the Carling Cup?

  • pope uk says:

i tink signin bernand wil be of gud impression, cos his is just 20. So by d tym he reach 25 or more, he can play like jack wilshere. Beside he wil be suportin jack in case he has injury. Although signin him only is not enof 4 arsenal. We need to also sign players like suarez, fellaini, williams and jolio cesar 2 chalenge 4 title race dis season.
