Is this 30-year-old really the answer to Tottenham’s goal-scoring woes?

Lisandro LopezBy now, just about everybody knows that Spurs are after a new striker. But potential deals just keep on hitting snags. Take for instance, long-term target Alvaro Negredo, who recently signed for Manchester City. Or Christian Benteke, who tempted Tottenham with his transfer request, before agreeing new terms with Aston Villa.

So far there’s been a lot of transfer foreplay and not enough cut and thrust. But Andre Villas-Boas must know as well as anybody else how important signing another striker is for Tottenham.

After a successful debut season in charge at White Hart Lane, AVB must have been devastated to see Spurs miss out on Champions League football by such a small margin.

The problem was clear: Emmanuel Adebayor failed to make much of an impact at the club, whilst Jermaine Defoe dipped in and out of form throughout the course of the season. Between them, the two strikers caused fans a great deal of frustration. Only Gareth Bale’s goal-scoring antics kept Tottenham in the running for Champions League football for so long.

But Spurs can’t afford to rely on Bale next season. They need somebody who can provide the goods up front on a more regular basis.

There’s been a lot of talk regarding Roberto Soldado, but I also consider Lisandro Lopez to be an excellent target.

Tottenham have been in for Lopez before – on the last day of the 2013 January transfer window. The bid was turned down, but Spurs may  be more successful this time if they try again.

The Argentinian only has a year left on his Lyon contract and his current club will surely be keen to move him on whilst they can still get a fee from his sale. (Source: The Mirror)

Spurs fans may balk at his age (he’s 30-years-old), but his experience could well be an asset in the Premier League. Yet, it’s his goal-scoring record that makes him an appealing target. He scored 14 goals in 39 games last year, 25 in 43 the year previous and 19 in 35 the year before that.

The man oozes confidence in front of goal. It’s about time he got a run out in the Premier League and was given an opportunity to prove himself on a bigger stage.

He’d be an excellent addition for Tottenham, particularly if he’s signed alongside a big player like Roberto Soldado (or whoever else Spurs happen to be chasing at this moment in time).

Either way, let’s hope that AVB acts quickly and brings in a striker or too soon!

What’s your take? Should Spurs really be on the hunt for a 30-year-old?
