Could this £15m Bundesliga ace be just right for Arsenal?

Luiz GustavoWith Arsenal on the hunt for a defensive midfielder this summer, they’d to well to take a look at Luiz Gustavo. The Bayern Munich midfielder has earned a real name for himself during his time in the Bundesliga and may well fancy a move to a club like Arsenal, were he’d have a more prominent position in the squad.

Gustavo started his career as a left-back, before being converted into a midfielder, so the defensive side of his game is deeply embedded. Whilst he likes to get forward and support the attack, he doesn’t have the Alex Song-like tendency to go wandering and leave holes in front of the back-four.

He’s a highly disciplined, well-drilled individual, who isn’t afraid of a strong tackle, loves to throw himself about and can be highly effective on his day. But we shouldn’t underplay his ability with the ball at his feet. The Brazilian has technical ability to spare and can pass the ball about extremely neatly.

This mixture of craft and endeavour would surely help him to quickly work his way into Arsenal fan’s good books.

Though he hasn’t exactly been under utilised at Bayern Munich (36 appearances last year and 46 the year before that), the arrival of players like Mario Gotze and Thiago Alcantara at the Allianz Arena, may put his future in jeopardy.

With the World Cup on the way (Gustavo has 10 caps for Brazil), I wouldn’t be surprised if Gustavo started to weigh up his options this summer. Perhaps the best move for his career would be to a club with slightly less competition in the centre of the park.

Whilst the Gunners are spoiled for choice when it comes to technically gifted midfielders, they don’t have an out-and-out defensive midfielder. Ever since Alex Song flew the coop, Arsenal have been lacking.

With Gustavo’s Bayern contract up in 2015, The Mirror claims that Arsenal would have to shell out as much as £15m to make a deal happen. That’s a lot of money, but it’s less than the Gunners would have to pay for their other defensive midfield targets, like Marouane Fellaini and Lars Bender.

His versatility would make him a good asset and his technical ability would help him to adjust quickly to Arsenal’s style of play. The Gunners could certainly do a lot worse.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for Luiz Gustavo?

  • Uzoo timevarist says:

Gustavo might adjust better to arsenal style of play than fellaini and can be cheaper option as well

  • SamSeem says:

He isn’t coming to Arsenal. Stop dreaming.

He already stated that he wants to fight for his place and play under Guardiola, and he has rubbished rumors already. Bayern have no intention to sell anyway.

Can’t you write something else on your blog that is actually worth writing instead of this piece of non-news? Maybe that way you can get more views on your page…
