Is it time for Liverpool to finally close this £18m deal?

Christian EriksenBy now, Liverpool fans must be a little tired of hearing the name ‘Christian Eriksen’. The youngster has been linked with a move to Anfield countless times over the last year and a half, but nothing has come of these stories. So far there’s been a lot of flirting and much batting of eyelashes, but Eriksen still isn’t any closer to becoming an Liverpool player.

This, in itself, surprises me. We know that Brendan Rodgers had his head turned by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, an all-action, goal-scoring midfielder (who ended up moving to Borussia Dortmund) earlier this summer. Christian Eriksen is a player in a similar mould, but I’d argue the Danish youngster has more technical ability.

What’s more, at just 21-years-old, Eriksen is only likely to get better and better. Who knows exactly how good he’ll be in two-or-three years time. Should he join the Reds, there’s every chance he’ll develop into a firm fan favourite.

I appreciate that many fans will feel that Joe Allen deserves a second chance to prove himself with this Liverpool side. Signing Eriksen would make things tougher on Allen, but if he’s really good enough to make it Anfield, he’ll manage.

Besides, you get the feeling that Eriksen wouldn’t come with all the confidence and form issues that have plagued Allen throughout his first year with the Reds. Christian Eriksen is a ready-made midfield dynamo, who must be desperate to make his mark at a big club.

That’s why I was excited to hear The Metro claim that Liverpool were close to agreeing an £18m deal for Eriksen with his current club, Ajax. That’s a lot of money, but it looks like a smart investment.

It was interesting to see Ryan Babel comment on his ex-Ajax team-mate on Twitter recently. Apparently Babel (who currently plays for Turkish side Kasimpasa) has given the Danish midfielder the low-down on Liverpool:

“4 the LFC fans who have questions about Eriksen, i’ve gave him enough information about the club during past season.. so he understands LFC.”

“In my opinion its LFC who have to make the real effort to get him, then i’m confident for a good ending. #LFC” @RyanBabel

It very much looks as though the ball is in Liverpool’s court. And in this case, Brendan Rodgers would be foolish to let the opportunity pass him by.

What’s your take? Is it time for Liverpool to finally close the deal for Christian Eriksen?

Come on BR. U didnt hesistate to splash out 15 m on joe ( back pass master) allen. But Im afraid it wont happen because rogers will have to bench his step son. So so sad

  • Funnie says:

Lfc will soon loose out on the deal again, because BR & his crew are always slow in making up their minds in bidding for star players. This is very annoying whereas other clubs are swiftly bidding for our own star player luis suarez (though he is an unfaithful fellow)

Rodgers isn’t going to pay it from his own pocket..we’ll only be targetting players and our shopping for this window might well have been over with a net expenditure of £3 mil….
We’ll keep talking about future and past with nothing in present..
I feel very very sorry for Gerrard, a man of loyalty and caliber..deserves to win everything….will keep supporting my club as I always did..but its about finances which our owners do have, but won’t spend..

C’mon FSG and the so called “Transfer Committee” ,stop dithering and if really serious about taking this club forward and recruiting young players with potential Then get your hands in your pockets and start funding some further deals . Get reql the deals concluded so far have been covered by the sale of Carol and Shelvey.Agree with comments re losing out to other clubs ,Ericksen is player who has shone on the European as well domestic stage. I think the transfer fee could be covered by shipping out players like Jo Allen , Borini , Assaidi who despite individual talents seem to be Floundering at LFC. I think the club needs players who are steong, versatile and can support attack as well as defence , Ericksen looks like the so called ” box to box ” player.

  • simeon says:

Acting slow would be a terrible mistake.. Eriksen would bring the spark to LFC’s midfield with his high creativity. Forget Bernard, he is just too small, keep suarez plus get a defensive beast…and we are good for the season…#LFC BLOOD!!

  • Clinton says:

Right guys get this.. Suarez wil not go to arsenal, it would make them title contenders duh! So hel stay or its Madrid with an exchange for 30mil plus that 19 year old Spanish kid. I rate that’s what thy could look at. Then buy erikson like in yesterday!!.. If we can get erikson earlier ,Suarez would be like ok let’s give it another season. I think we need left back rising prospect, erikson, and a young promising established striker to back up Suarez. Lfc South Africa YNWA!!!
