Would Arsenal really splash £42m on a single player?

SuarezArsenal fans are used to seeing their club displaying a rather frugal approach to the transfer market. Arsene Wenger has become better known for developing talent, rather than signing it. Wenger is the champ when it comes to buying small and selling big.

But this summer represents a new kind of challenge for the Frenchman. With just a single year left on his Arsenal deal (which could well be renewed this summer), it’s beginning to look like crunch-time. With years of failure dragging the club down, the Gunners need to make some new signings if they are to re-find their place among the European elite.

What’s more, Arsenal need world-class players. They don’t need utility players. They don’t need squad players. They need individuals who can come in and make an immediate impact. These kind of players won’t come cheap.

But that’s the playing field that Arsenal operate in nowadays. The goal-posts have moved. It’s up to Arsene Wenger to prove that he’s been able to keep up. This is likely to be no small feat for man who’s top signing was worth approximately £15m.

So what are we to make of the claims that Arsenal have lodged a ‘massive’ £42m bid for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez (Source: The Metro). We’ve also heard stories that suggest Arsenal would have to spend £50m to sign Suarez. That sum is more than triple the size of Arsenal’s current transfer record. It’s an absolutely stunning amount of cash.

Apparently Arsenal are willing to offer £35m upfront, with a further £7m to follow in add-ons. This makes the figure slightly more palatable, but it’s still a whopping great sum.

With Luis Suarez’s hatred of the English Press all too clear, who knows if he’d be willing to move to London, one of the media capitals of the world? Perhaps the appeal for him would lie in the opportunity to play Champions League football?

As for Arsenal, they know what they’d be getting. Despite all his antics, Luis Suarez was the Premier League’s second best player last season (behind Gareth Bale). He popped up with so many important goals, created many opportunities for Liverpool and caused all kinds of problems for defenses up and down the country. The man is a sensational talent. He may even be worth £42m.

If Arsenal really have bid that much money, it would be a true sign of their ambition. It would be evidence that Arsene Wenger really is ready to start battling it out at the top of the table once more. Given the confidence this would transmit throughout the squad, it may be a worthy investment.

What’s your take? Would Arsenal really spend £42m on a single player?
