Roberto SoldadoWith Jermaine Defoe and Emmanuel Adebayor competing to provide smaller and smaller returns, it’s little wonder that Spurs are on the hunt for a new striker this summer.

Andre Villas-Boas enjoyed a decent first season in charge at White Hart Lane, but was seriously hindered by a lack of options upfront. Whilst few people would have foreseen Adebayor and Defoe slumping quite so hard, it was more-or-less always plenty clear that the addition of Clint Dempsey would not be sufficient.

Given the circumstances, it’s admirable that Spurs were able to hang in there for so long when it came to the battle for fourth place. You get the feeling, however, that if it weren’t for the club’s Welsh wizard, Gareth Bale, things could have been a lot worse. Bale is a real wonder and his goals last year proved to be invaluable.

But Spurs will have to improve next season if they’re to claim that highly coveted top four slot and earn Champions League football.

Unfortunately, many of their key targets appear to be doing their best to hamper AVB’s efforts in the transfer market. Take long term target Alvaro Negredo, who recently agreed terms with Manchester City. Or Christian Benteke, who handed in a transfer request earlier this summer, attracted Tottenham’s attention and then went and signed a new deal with Aston Villa.

So far, it’s been pretty disappointing. But there’s plenty of time left for Spurs to put things right. Breaking the club’s transfer record and signing Valencia’s goal-scoring talent, Roberto Soldado, would certainly be a good start.

According to The Mail, Spurs are ready to make an £18m bid for the 28-year-old. This would be a massive step forward for Tottenham.

The man is a natural goalscorer. He has been a 25+ goals-per-season striker for the last three seasons. Last year he scored 30 goals in 46 games. He’s at the peak of his game and must be keen for a move to a big club.

I’d also argue that he’d be a good fit for the Premier League. Though he’s got good technical ability, he’s also physically strong, can head the ball well and has a good reading of the game. It’s easy to envision him terrorising defences up and down the country.

As such, £18m seems to be a fair price. After all, signing Soldado could well take Tottenham to the next level.

What’s your take? Would signing Soldado be a step forward for Spurs?

    Try to keep up!…

An “18m bid was submitted and turned down previously.

During negotiation when Mr Baldini, spurs new director of football, was in valencia discussing personal terms with the player and his agent and also talking to Valencia president Amadeo Salvo a £22m plus add ons was tabled.

From most of the whispering from reliable sources Salvo did not want this and will not budge from the £26 (30m Euro) price tag, and set a deadline of the 3rd of August to avoid further tax costs.

He is quoted as saying “We agreed to meet Tottenham again to discuss the ways of paying and we did that because we understood that his buy-out clause would be met. Speaking about ways that deals are paid is normal,”.

It now seems as though spurs may be willing to meet the full amount wanted, but wants to pay this in installments, with some possibly being based on performance based add ons rather than an out and out payment.

Salvo is still not quite happy with the current payment proposals, so negotiations continue.

I believe this deal is very much alive… and we could hear an announcement of an agreement either this week or early next week.

We are quickly getting to the stalemate point however where Daniel Levy, who is known as a tough negotiator will either decide he wants the player and makes it happen. Or will decided that the deal is untenable and walk away.

That is just my opinion though….

How much!! Pretty sure the release is 25 million and Spurs reported to have made a bid of 22 mill with adds on bringing it up to 26. The Valencia president is in need of ALL the cash NOW. The deal is there and now Spurs have to wait.

I personally feel the deal will be blown out of the water by another club and leave Daniel Levy in quite a tough situation with the Spurs faithfull after seeing the deal with Villa fall through by Levy not being quick enough.
Athletico did more in three days than the Tottenham board could do in 1 month.

Please Mr Levy, speand a few million more to secure his services, also either fred, or lopez, because what you spend now you will get poss four fold back in respect of champions league football next season, so Mr Levy please act very quickly, you must know by now that defoe and ade, do not cut it any more, and we will be back to square one next season, if we have these two up front, god forbid

that price is over d top. We can’t take dat kinda risk with a 28yr old. Surely, there are other less flashy but reasonable alternatives. And de’r proven at a high level too. Yilmaz, fred, kiesling to name a few. Still beats me why we dint go Gomez.

      Hi Od,

Absolutely agree not only with your comment but each name you have mentioned. Gomez was for the taking….For gods sake Yilmaz definitely looks a great buy or at least worth the gamble, Fred is proven and Keisling is also worth the gamble….Forget Soldado for the money …… You are 100% correct and one of the best (if not shortest) posts I have read…. Well done……please forward to Daniel Levy….. 🙂 SS
