Should Liverpool motor ahead with this £6.5m bargain signing?

Simon MignoletPepe Reina has been a fine servant for Liverpool over the years. The Spanish stopper has made 395 appearances for the Reds and kept an astonishing 175 clean-sheets.

Whilst he’s had the odd dodgy moment, should his Liverpool career come to an end sometime soon, I’m sure he’ll be fondly remembered by the fans.

It’s worth remembering that he was once considered one of the best keepers in the Premier League. For two-or-three seasons, when he was at the top of his game, he was difficult to beat. That’s why he accrued so many clean sheets so quickly.

But the last couple of years have seen a steady decline in form for the Spaniard. The once unflappable keeper has let mistakes creep into his game and these errors have cost the Reds. Liverpool were once indomitable at the back. This just isn’t the case anymore.

This, I think, is the reason there is so much speculation around Reina’s future. Maybe Brendan Rodgers is looking to cash in on his keeper before his reputation (and his price-tag) decreases any further.

If he does leave, Rodger’s next task will be finding a replacement. Whoever joins the club will have big shoes (or gloves?) to fill.

According to The Mirror, Brendan Rodgers has singled out Sunderland’s highly-rated keeper Simon Mignolet as the man for the job. Indeed, Liverpool are readying a £6.5m deal for the keeper this summer. If they get him for that price, they’ll have secured a genuine bargain.

This, I think would be a fantastic step forward for both Mignolet and Liverpool. Whilst Reina is getting on in years, the Sunderland stopper is just 24-years-old. He has at least a decade left at the top of his game. He has the time to go on and become a true Liverpool legend.

He’s also good enough to do this. Whilst the Black Cats have struggled all year, Mignolet has been in fine form. He started by securing a clean sheet against Arsenal on the first day of the season and he hasn’t looked back. Who can forget his incredible reflex save to prevent a Robert Huth header finding the back of the net?

He’s been with Sunderland for three years now and must surely fancy a new challenge. Much will depend on Reina’s future of course, but if Liverpool are interested, Mignolet would certainly represent a good match.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool look to snap up this £6.5m bargain?
