Arsenal linked to talented young French star. What a shocker! The young man in question is Clement Grenier, an attacking midfielder who currently plies his trade for Ligue 1 club, Lyon. At 22-years-old, he’s yet to play for the full French International side, but has played for the U16s, U17s, U18s, U19s, U20s and U21s.
He’s also a player who attracted the interest of Real Madrid, Chelsea and, yes, Arsenal as far back as 2008, when he would have been just 18-years-old. After a couple of season’s playing for Lyon’s reserves, he started to become a regular fixture in the Ligue 1 side’s first team last season (23 appearances) and has further kicked-on this year (32 appearances).
Impressively, given his age, he also chipped in 7 goals and 9 assists this season. If he continues to improve at this rate, he’s sure to develop into a world-class talent. It’s easy enough to see why Arsene Wenger may be interested.
Wenger has always kept a watchful eye on Ligue 1 and if he feels that Grenier is good enough to make the step up to the Premier League, we have little reason to doubt him.
The player himself seems to be keen to move on. There’s been a fair amount of speculation regarding the player’s future and Grenier himself has commented on his situation:
“I have more or less made a decision about which club I want to join. I have made the choice for sporting reasons above all. Arsenal? It could well be them.”
Pretty enigmatic for a young lad. The Mirror has slapped an £8m price-tag on him. That may seem like a lot of money for an untested footballer, but he certainly has the potential to merit this evaluation.
Arsenal fans may be disappointed that he’s not a bigger name. But as the club just let go of ten young players, they need to start re-building around a bedrock of young stars. Grenier fits the mould. Besides, he seems to except that he wouldn’t be a nailed on starter:
“There would be competition for places, but you get that at all big clubs and it does not stop me making my decision. I am still young, but I have always set myself targets and I do everything possible to exceed them.”
That’s a healthy dose of reality. If Arsene Wenger is interested, let’s hope he can seal the deal.
