Should Arsenal really be pursuing this £38m wildcard?

Nicolas GaitanOne of the things that was so disappointing about Arsenal’s last season was the lack of real attacking flair they had to offer.

Whilst the Gunners’ midfield could whip the ball about neatly and slide the ball into dangerous areas, very few players in this Arsenal team are able to take on their man and beat him.

It’s a bad sign when Gervinho is your most tricky player. What the Ivorian lacks in footballing nous, he makes up for in sheer unpredictability, but this hasn’t been enough to secure him a regular space in the team.

Could this lack of cut-and-thrust upfront be the reason why Arsenal weren’t as effective going forward last season? After all, the issue wasn’t that the Gunners weren’t converting their chances, it’s that they weren’t creating them. This suggests that Arsene Wenger’s boys weren’t getting in behind regularly enough.

So here’s hoping that the Arsenal boss will look to address this issue in the summer transfer window.

According to Portuguese source ABola, Wenger has taken an interest in Benfica’s crafty playmaker, Nicolas Gaitan. This, I think, should give Arsenal fans plenty of cause for excitement.

The 25-year-old forward is just coming off the back of a devastating season at the Estadio da Luz. Gaitan is part of a side that handed the Primiera Liga title to FC Porto in the final weeks of the season, before losing the Europa League final to a late Chelsea goal.

For a player like Gaitan, who has personally enjoyed a great season (5 goals, 13 assists, lots of neat build up play), the disappointment must have been palpable. I think this is part of the reason why there’s so much speculation surrounding his future.

The sources suggests that the Argentine playmaker has a  £38m price-tag. This, of course, is way inflated and is not representative of his current value in the transfer market. Benfica wont want to sell, but I’m sure Arsene Wenger can negotiate them down to a more representative price.

If this happens, Arsenal are likely to be in a much stronger position next season. Indeed, his technique, grace, close control and dribbling ability could be massively influential in the Gunners fight for silverware.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for Gaitan? How much will it cost to snap him up?

Gaitan a great player . But a lot of money for a midfielder . 32 max . But would be a great signing for us ..hope arsenal do try to push for this sort of player .. Also think lewandoski in stead of higuain He hasn’t got any pace but a great finisher . Lewandoski a all round beter striker .. Come on wringer spend that cash …

  • gooner son says:

    £38mil with 5 goals and 13 assists.
No thanks. For that amount I would rather
    Have higuain & mignolet.

  • temigunga says:

Gaitan may be a good player but unrealistic price tog on his shoulders!

  • Crimson says:

Wenger is reportedly bricking himself over Fellaini’s 23M pound price tag so hopefully he won’t be planning on signing this guy for that price.

  • colin says:

Wayne Rooney will be a good signing but should play just behind the striker. We need an all round striker not a striker like Girroud who is good in air only.

  • colin says:

    Yes we need the striker..

  • A Akers says:

WE NEED FELLAINI BUT WENGER IS SUCH A TIGHT CUNT WE WILL LOSE HIM WENGER IS THE ONE WHO SHOULD PISS OFF OR AT LEAST SPEND THE MONEYU THEY HAVE GIVEN HIM AFTER ALL ITS NOT HIS FUCKING MONEY

  • Uzoo timevarist says:

We should rather bring bacck cesc fabregas who has established himself at the emirates before he left for barcelona 2 years ago. He can be purchased at a cheaper rate, he is a world-class goal assists genuis and has no prmblem adapting to the premier league

  • GUN says:

We don’t need him. It is better to spend 10 more million and sign Cavani. Cavani is worth the money.

  • nick says:

    cesc fabregas!!!!!!!!!!
