Is this £20m Bundesliga star a perfect fit for Arsenal?

Ilkay GundoganOne of the most bizarre rumours in recent weeks concerning Arsenal, was the Daily Mail‘s claim that Arsene Wenger is ready to splash £67m on signing Gonzalo Higuain, Ilkay Gundogan and Lars Bender.

It’s bizarre, because we’re not used to seeing Arsenal get linked to players of this stature. We’re not used to seeing Arsene Wenger line up targets with large price-tags. The Mail claims that both Higuain and Gundogan could cost around £20m each, whilst Bender may be available for £17m. That’s £67m in total!

On the other hand, it’s exciting because Arsenal now have to ability to compete for these players. After years of playing second fiddle to the European elite, the Gunners finally have cash to spend.

The Emirates move is no longer draining cash from the club. Arsenal have signed a couple of fantastic commercial deals, dropped some dead wood (Denilson, Andrei Arshavin and Sebastien Squillaci) and are making a fortune through ticket sales.

The club is in a very strong position financially. Indeed, the fans expect there to be some serious spending this summer. If that doesn’t happen, who knows how the Arsenal faithful will react?

They’ll certainly be delighted to hear the club has been linked to three big players. Yet, both Gundogan and Bender play a similar role in their respective teams. This looks like an either/or situation.

If Wenger is faced with the choice, the solution should be clear: go for Gundogan.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder and German international (7 caps) is already the real deal and he’s just 22-years-old.

He plays the holding role in the centre-of-the-park and is known for this ability to mix his technical ability and accurate passing, with a competitive edge. Gundogan is more than happy to snap into tackles, get himself in the way of the ball and make a general nuisance of himself.

It’s this ability to switch up his playing style that’s likely to attract Arsene Wenger. It would also provide Mikel Arteta with the opportunity to play further forward next season, which should give the Gunners more cut-and-thrust moving forward.

Dortmund have already lost Mario Gotze this summer and are in the middle of a battle to keep hold of Robert Lewandowski. Given all the player turnover, they’ll be desperate to keep hold of Gundogan.

So if Arsenal are interested, they’ll have to come in strong. It’s time for the club to put its money where it’s mouth is.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Ilkay Gundogan at the Emirates?

  • Dean Wise says:

    Totaling £57 million!!
    Simple.

  • Uzoo timevarist says:

I prefer gundogan to fellani because of the formers style of play which suits the gunners tip tap and fluid flow pattern of play more than fellani’s hard style and long ball inclined style of play. Either him or bender can be a great addition

    • Luken says:

And Id prefer Messi over Darren Bent. Beggars cant be choosers.

    • baggy says:

What u said is a big lie.fellani is much better dan dem! If u don’t no it,knw it now ok.beside fellani is a premiership type dan gundogan $ bender

  • Morrygooner says:

    Gund zan Lars

  • Luken says:

    Just one question…

Why would a player from one of the best teams in Europe leave for a trophyless irrelevant team who celebrate 4th as if they’ve won a world cup?

  • Kones,Sagamian Narok says:

plz Wenger, sign at least 3 quality players esp Higuain/Roney,Reus/Fellaini/Gundogan;Cesar n one defender

  • J.Mwash says:

    Get both of them Arsene

  • Engr.Tytler 'Shola says:

It will be good addition to Arsene Wenger side.,precisely just 57Million.

  • Peter says:

Wenger should try and buy about three good players now b/c very soon there be no good players again again in the market.

  • henry says:

Gndogan would be a beter choice to fellani cos of the age, price and we play more alike.24 million for fellani who has no champions ligue experience is too high.gndogan would be a beter option..

  • baggy says:

We need fellani wenger forget about dis german players abeg!

  • Musa bah says:

Stingie wenger try fast 4 d club lol

  • SUMI AMOS says:

Yes he is a briliant he can compete to arsenal play

  • tony says:

Why oh why does Wenger try to offer ridiculous sums for players he ‘wants’ to buy. If paper talk is anything to go by he has offered Real 8m euros less than what they want for Higuian and wonders why some other team will probably buy him from under our noses. PAY THE MONEY WENGER!! and maybe we can build a winning team. For how great most people think he is in the world of football – how long would he have lasted at Chelsea, Man City or any team that wants to win trophies. Get a new keeper, Bergovic or Mignolet, a C D M, Capoue would be perfect, and maybe another striker as l don’t know why but l feel that Giroud will score 20 plus goals this coming season if we get a decent c d m as this would free up our more creative players. Oh yes – Fellaini would be a total waste of money as he is not a holding midfielder like Capoue or Wanyama which is what we are desperate for.

  • Eldo says:

His maths is poor. 20+20+17 makes only 57.

  • Edwin simiyu says:

New sign will make chenge at arsenal

  • michael says:

20+20+17 is 57 million not 67. Gundogan would be a great get as he is a top quality player. Either him or Fellaini would be great in the CDM position. Fellaini has said that this is his preferred position. He was dribbled past less than 15 times compared to Arteta, who given was playing outside of his preferred role, was dribbled past 37 times. Between Fellaini and Gundogan you can’t go wrong. Personally, I would prefer Gundogan but either one could be a cery good holding midfielder for us.

  • Muh'd says:

Wenger we need player pls sign dem all up we are wait 2 see new player @Arsenal

  • Jamahaidhar aal says:

Sighn… Wenger sighn any would be great for us but the likes of wanyama sounds more i deal coz he is strong in DM,then rooney no need of nani coz we have theo and OX.
