It’s strange, that in a season where Wigan were relegated, Roberto Martinez can still claim to have had a more successful season than Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool.
After all, Wigan won the FA Cup against a lacklustre Manchester City side, whilst Liverpool have coasted all season. After a poor summer in the transfer window, the Reds struggled to get started and soon found themselves with too much to do to get back into contention.
Worst of all, they didn’t have the motivation, or the ability to drag themselves back up into the top four. Even the arrival of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho has done little to end the rut.
Wigan on the other hand, have been all passion. Unfortunately, their soft-centre and defensive weaknesses meant they were dead in the water from the start.
But there are plenty of talented players at Wigan. Now that the club has been relegated, I’m sure there will be plenty of interested clubs circling round, ready to snap up the brightest of the bunch.
It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Brendan Rodgers had already singled out one or two players he’d like to see move to Anfield.
Along with James McArthur, the man who’s likely to attract the most attention is Callum McManaman, the hot-headed British forward, who has impressed with his dynamic running, unpredictability and his pace down the wings.
He has the stigma of a terrible tackle against Newcastle’s Massimo Haidara hanging over him. And indeed, the studs-up, brainless nature of the tackle was wince-inducing, but McManaman seems to have enough in his locker to suggest that he’ll kick-off the poor reputation.
This is clear to everybody, including Roberto Martinez, who is keen for the youngster to stay with the Latics: “I think if one player needs to stay at the club and become an important part of this football club, it is Callum.”
It’s hard to argue with these comments, but I also think the youngster would fit in nicely with the other youngsters at Liverpool. He’s a raw talent, no doubt, but he hasn’t looked out of place playing against the Premier League big boys.
So why should he take a step down? If Liverpool come knocking, he’d be crazy to shirk their advances.
What’s your take? Would Callum McManaman be a good fit for Liverpool?

The arrival of Coutinho and Sturridge has done a huge amount to stop the rot. Look at the points tally before and after their arrival at the club. Sorry to burst your bubble with facts, rather than unsubstantiated comments.
