Should Liverpool look to seal the deal for this dynamic duo?

James McArthurArsenal may have sent Wigan crashing out of the Premier League last week, but the truth is, the Latics were goners a long time ago. Whilst Roberto Martinez’s men showed some attacking flair, Wigan have had a soft-centre all season long.

For every result like the one against Manchester City which won the the FA Cup, there was another crushing capitulation, like the one against Swansea. Still, this is an FA Cup winning side. It’s not all bad and there’s a few quality players sprinkled among the dross.

With Wigan now relegated, the rest of the world can start picking out the club’s brightest and best and then swoop in and pluck them up.

Will Wigan’s hottest properties really want to bide their time in the Premier League? Martinez seems to have accepted this: “You cannot stop a player from going to a different level. What you can affect is the value and timing.”

The two players likely to attract the most attention are British duo Callum McManaman and James McArthur. They’re both British and they’re both young, so The Express has linked the pair to Liverpool. That’s despite the fact that the Reds ‘Best of British’ transfer policy was seemingly trashed some time ago.

Still, they are both good players who may be able to do a job at Anfield, particularly as they develop and grow.

Callum McManaman is probably best known to casual football fans as the young lad who sunk his studs into Massadio Haidara’s legs. It was a horrendous tackle, there’s no doubting that, but it was born out of naivety, inexperience and passion.

If he carries on playing like he has done in recent weeks, he will soon shirk the bad reputation. McManaman offers a certain kind of unpredictable exuberance. He’s pacey, attacking-minded and confident. As a winger, he’s great at beating his man and I think he’d provide a viable option over the likes of Stewart Downing.

But it’s James McArthur who would be the real catch here. McArthur has been watched by the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea, but given that he’s drawn some comparisons to Steven Gerrard, he’d fit in best at Anfield.

McArthur always looks supremely confident when he’s on the ball. He carries it well through the midfield and can knock it about nicely too. There’s good reason to believe he could go on to be a massive star.

As such, it makes sense that Liverpool move in now and snap him up. If Callum McManaman comes with him, that would be no bad thing.

What’s your take? Should Liverpool look to seal the deal for this Wigan pair?

AM SO SORRY FOR MY COMMENT, brendan rodger should look at reasonable players? ?that can help LIVERPOOL to return to top4, like CALLUM MCMANAMA, not KOLO TOURE whilst has already finish his futball carrier at ARSENAL.

  • drewfrew says:

James McArthur … is a scottish international and a few years older than the more talented Irish international James McCarthy…. who has been previously linked with liverpool … at least get the players name right!! FFS!…. crap lazy journalism..McArthur is not liverpool class … McCarthy maybe..

  • David says:

I think you mean James McCarthy not James McArthur. They have both, McCarthy attracting the interest though.

  • Ibrahim says:

They just wont do. They are at best back up players for our team right now, looking at our squad we already have plenty that would fit that category. We need players to come into the first team and make a real difference, not to provide support to what we already have otherwise it will be another season of finishing between 8th and 6th position.

  • Stevieg1000 says:

The funny thing is I know you mean James McCarthy not James McArthur!!! James McArthur is a shockingly awful player and one of the reasons Wigan got relegated. Dire player. James McCarthy on the other hand is a decent young player. Nothing better than what we already have though so no thanks. As for McMananaman why the hell would we sign him when we have Raheem, Suso and Ibe… All far superior talents than knock the ball past someone sprint and put in an awful cross McMananaman. If we seriously bought either of these players I would be majorly depressed!!!! Shocking journo.
