Rui PatricioWhilst Arsenal have lacked success on the football pitch this season, there’s a good chance they’ll fare better in this summer’s transfer window.

After all, we’ve heard a great deal about the Gunners recent commercial deals. Now that they’ve batted eyelashes at the likes of Puma, there can be little excuse for tightening the purse strings this time round.

It may not be in Arsene Wenger’s nature, but the Frenchman needs to spend if he’s to have any chance of securing silverware next year.

And with his old rival, Sir Alex Ferguson finally gone, the odds are as good as ever – if they club brings the right people in.

Along with signing a new centre-forward (or two!), Arsenal’s main priority this summer should be signing a pair of safe hands.

The Arsenal back-four need to play in front of a goalkeeper who fills them with confidence. The likes of Thomas Vermaelen and Bacary Sagna have been causing plenty of mistakes of their own accord, but sealing up a leaky defence starts by looking at the man between the sticks.

Arsenal fans have no reason to feel any confidence when the likes of Vito Mannone and Lukasz Fabianksi don the goalkeeping gloves. Even Wojciech Szczesny, Arsenal’s great hope for the future, seems to have lost his spark.

Luckily, it seems that Arsenal are already making some serious in roads in the transfer market. According to TalkSPORT, the Gunners have recently had an £8.5m bid for Sporting Lisbon’s keeper, Rui Patricio turned down.

This may be disappointing, but it is evidence that Arsene Wenger is already looking for solutions to his much discussed problem.

Patricio is a one-club man who has been enjoying himself at late with Sporting. The 25-year-old is one of European football’s best shot-stoppers, as well as being a man who knows how to command his penalty area. At the moment he’s oozing with confidence and would surely be up for a move to a big club.

TalkSPORT suggest that Sporting are holding out for £12.5m. Hopefully both clubs can meet in the middle and Arsenal can get their man. After all, if the club pull off this transfer, they’ll be one step closer to building a squad that’s capable of challenging for the Premier League title next season.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal make another move for Rui Patricio?
