The race for fourth: Tottenham the favourites & Liverpool still in contention?

|

December doubles up as a festive period and also an exciting time in the English League. The matches are coming in thick and fast and teams are striving to acquire as many points as possible. The League table is beginning to shape up, both at the top and the bottom.

Manchester United have stretched their lead to a whopping 7-point margin over their neighbouring rivals, and the reigning champions Manchester City. Meanwhile, at the bottom, relegation candidates are struggling to pull out wins in order to survive. London based club QPR have had a torrid season so far and they are pundit’s favorite for the drop.

However, the main battle appears to be for the number 4 spot. To most of the Arsenal faithful, this has become a recurring position and Arsene Wenger has said before that finishing in the top four is the equivalent of a trophy. Teams have become more ambitious for this spot. First in line is David Moye’s men, Everton.

The Toffees had a seven game unbeaten streak before they succumbed to an unlikely 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on the weekend. The closest they have come to Champions League football, was a group stage in 2005-2006 campaign where they got to third round before losing to Spanish side Villareal 4-2 on aggregate. They have been consistent at home, making Goodison Park a fortress where many of the League heavyweights have found it hard putting the 3 points in the bag. This firmly puts them in the hunt for Europe’s most elite competition.

As such, the Merseysiders begin the 2013 on a high note. With talented lads such as Nikica Jelavic, Pienaar and Fellaini surely puts them in contention.

Over to the capital, London, the age old struggle for power between Arsenal and Tottenham continues. The Gunners were in a blip with a streak of losses and draws. However, following four consecutive wins, a bit of consistency has been renewed. An emphatic 7-3 win over Newcastle on late night match fixture rekindled hope. A 1-1 draw may well have knocked the wind out of their sails, but Wenger’s team is known for its never say die attitude in the race for Champions League glory, having qualified for it 13 times in a row.

At least get your facts right before you write an article.

Everton did not get to the 3rd round, they never actually qualified for the competition proper as they lost the qualifying/playoff match.

Spurs, got to the Qtr Finals and lost 6 – 0 to Real Madrid – We beat AC Milan 1-0 at the San Siro and drew 0-0 at WHL.
