Should Manchester United secure this bizarre DOUBLE transfer deal?

Transfer season always throws out a few good (in other words, barmy) rumours and the Daily Star hasn’t left us down this January.

According to the Paper, Sir Alex Ferguson is set to offer both Frank Lampard AND Ashley Cole a chance to join the Red Devils.

Isn’t it fairly hard to imagine two players who we’ve associated with Chelsea for so long, moving on to another big institution like Manchester United?

What’s more isn’t it hard to imagine Sir Alex Ferguson being interested in TWO players who are approaching the end of their careers?

Lampard and Cole are no spring-chickens. They’re hardened England veterans, 34 and 32-years-old respectively. If they do move club, they will both likely be signing their final footballing contracts.

So, is there any credence to this story? Well, both players look to be on their way out at Chelsea. Their Blue contracts will be up at the end of June and they’ll be on the hunt for a new challenge.

I’m a little surprised that the Blues aren’t interested in keeping either player on. This may be down to their wage demands, but it’s not like Chelsea have much to worry about financially.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have to watch their spending. If Lampard and Cole are both free agents, they’re in a strong position when it comes to negotiations. Sir Alex is likely to have to pay over the odds for these two when it comes to wages and given their age, this would represent something of a risk.

Yes, both players look to have another good season in them, but there’s no telling when their decline will begin in earnest. Cole plays in a position where pace is important and Frank Lampard, who is known for his lung-busting runs from the midfield may soon start to struggle in this regard.

If Chelsea don’t want to risk keeping these players on the books, it seems rather strange that Manchester United would.

The Star also claims that there’s interest from China and the MLS in Lampard and that Cole is being pursued by Real Madrid. Wouldn’t these be the ideal final resting places for two players who have had tremendous careers? They’d both be paid well and would fit into their surrounding neatly.

I’m not sure the same would be true at Manchester United.

What’s your take? Can you see Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole at Old Trafford?

    – I’m sorry, but this is plain wrong. United can easily afford this deal. Firstly, the players will cost next to nothing in transfer fees. Secondly, their wages (considering the low transfer fee) wouldn’t exactly break the bank for United. Thirdly, and perhaps most obviously, Financial Fair Play comes into force next year…

United have absolutely zero concerns about FPP. Yes, they are in debt (thanks to the leeching c*nts from America), but they make a profit EVERY SINGLE YEAR and their costs are far lower than their income.

Chelsea on the other hand are complying with FPP by the skin of their teeth. They turned their first profit in all the time Abramovich has been in charge last year – £1m. Woohoo!

If Chelsea are going to take FPP seriously – there is every chance the Russian playboy will not take it seriously – BUT, if they are then it is Chelsea who need to watch their spending, not United. Getting some of their highest earners off the books seems to make sense.

All that said, I can’t see United going for even one of them, let alone both – although SAF has kept on veterans like Giggs and Scholes he rarely buys them, often opting for youth instead.

buy frank Lampard and forget cole

  • UTD boy says:

Cold yes to give Evra the breaks and completion he needs frank no way we need an enforcer who can break opposition play not another attacking player

  • Craig says:

Why do we need them. Buy back ronaldo in the summer, bring in zaha and bring in baines. I would also like to see hummels come in. Rio, giggs and scholes will be gone. Carrick will be next in another 2 seasons. Will rooney be here in the 13/14 season?

Frank and cole not for us. Go and join Celtic lmao.

Since when did Man Utd become a charity foundation for the elderly whose youth it never groomed?

Please give Man United the respect it deserves
