Which of these three Liverpool deals should Rodgers look to wrap up?

Finally! Liverpool have only gone and wrapped up a deal for Swansea City and Team GB ace Joe Allen, who’ll move to Anfield for £15m. The reaction has been fairly mixed. Some claimed that he was just another Liverpool rip-off (citing Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson, yawn) whilst others were content to note that it ‘was about bloody time!’

Of course, what Liverpool fans really want to know now, is whether Brendan Rodgers work in the transfer market is complete. Given how far off the mark they were last season, you’d hope that there’s still more to come.

Yes, cash-strapped Liverpool have already spent £25m, but if they’re to keep pace with the Manchester sides and Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham (who seem to have their own problems making signings this summer) they may need to make a couple more astute signings.

The Mirror claim that Brendan Rodgers is after not one, not two but three new signings. Hurrah! So just who are the Reds after?

It’s claimed that Clint Dempsey is still ‘certain’ to arrive at Anfield before the window slams-shut, whilst they’re also on the lookout for a winger, with Adam Johnson and Theo Walcott though to be targets. Then there’s Real Madrid’s forgotten man, Nuri Sahin, who is on the hunt for regular first team football this summer and may consider Liverpool the ideal solution.

With all these candidates in the mix, just who should Liverpool look to snap up?

For a start, I’d stay well clear of Theo Walcott. He may be a tad better than Downing, but that doesn’t make him a sensible purchase. He’s all pace and no guile. He’s Billy the Whizz, completely free of smarts. Whilst he’s capable of impressing from time to time (and actually has pretty good statistics) his tendency to frustrate may well prevent Liverpool from moving forward.

As such, I think that Adam Johnson would be a better addition in this area of the pitch. His tendency to infuriate is much lower than Walcott’s and he’s got more to his game than just pace. He’s a direct winger who can beat his man and that’s something that Liverpool lack.

Whilst I rate Clint Dempsey, I think Nuri Sahin is the ‘must buy’ player needed in this part of the pitch. He’s incredibly talented, loves to get stuck in and fight for possession, whilst carving the opposition side apart with his passes. He may not score as often as Dempsey, but he’s a lot more creative and has more dimensions to his game than the American. I genuinely think he’s going to blossom into something a bit special and I’d love to see him at Anfield, even if it’s just for a single season.

What’s your take? Which Liverpool deals would you like to see wrapped up next season?

What a shocking article!! Truly astonishing!!
    Addressing a number of points:
“Of course, what Liverpool fans really want to know now, is whether Brendan Rodgers work in the transfer market is complete.” – Erm, no we’re not – Rodgers said himself yesterday that he still wants 2 or 3 new players just to replace who’s left!!
“Yes, cash-strapped Liverpool have already spent £25m….” – who’s cash strapped? They’ve already said there is plenty f money to spend but they have to spend wisely! It was the likes of you who said we’ve wasted money, now we’re cash strapped!!!
Do you work for the S*n????

  • N says:

Adam Johnson is a wasted talent at city. He could make a real difference and keep downing in his toes so he knows he can’t be as pony as last season. Sahin would be great too as competition to Lucas. Tello at Barcelona too for extra competition in the wing forward positions.

  • jim says:

listen am more bothered about who needs to get shoved out the club!and the names of Adam and downing spring to mind, then whoever we buy to replace them can only be a step-up!

  • Rock says:

Dempsey and Ramirez would be two good signings for us!

  • Jonathan says:

We need to bin Adam and Downing first, they were never good enough for the shirt.
Then bring some youngsters through, without too much pleasure on them.

  • Lfc4lifer says:

    Theo(£15m/£17m) and Sahin (loan)
As I’m sure Tello is a left sided midfielder/attacker which is covered with Borini/Suarez.

If we are getting Tello as cover then £5m is good business!

Get those 2 and I’ll be happy, thrown in Tello and I’ll be over the moon!!!

  • Matu says:

Walcott is a bit more than “a tad” better than Downing, you gimp. He’s a far better player than Downing! You slag him off then contradict yourself by admitting he has good stats.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good slagging off! Everytime someone slags him off, he plays a brilliant game for Arsenal.

It’s like a reverse version of The Emperor’s New Clothes!

    Idiot 1 – Isn’t Walcott gash?
Idiot 2 – Well, he scores a few goals!
    Idiot 1 – No, he’s gash!
Idiot 2 – Also gets quite a few assists!
    Idiot 1 – No, he’s well gash!
    Idiot 2 – He’s got pace too!
    Idiot 1 – Yeah, that’s all he’s got!
Idiot 2 – Well, apart from the goals, assists and the dribbling ability.
    Idiot 1 – Yeah, but he’s still proper sh*t!
    Idiot 2 – Yeah, he’s well sh*t!
Idiot 3 – Yeah, proper sh*t! Who we talking about again?

  • Colin says:

Adam, Downing and Carroll I believe should be sold. I don`t see a bright future for any of them at Liverpool.

  • Denis says:

B Rodgers needs to clear out the dead wood players still at club first:

    1: B Jones GK
    2: J Flanagan RB/LB
    3: J Spearing CM/DM
    4: J cole AM/LW/RW
    5: C Adams CM/DM
    6: J Carragher CB/RB

Then the owners should give B Rodgers a descent amount of money (£55-£65M)on these 8 players:

    Three Defensive Players:

1: GK: Al Habsi Of Wigan for £3-£6M
2: LB: A Cissokho Of Lyon for £4-£9M
3: CB: S Dawson Of Tottenham for £8-£12M

    Five Attacking Players:

4: CM: Fernandez Of Besiktas for £4-£7M
    5: CM/DM: N Sahin Of R Madrid on LOAN.
6 RW: T Walcott Of Arsenal For £12-£16M
7: LW: S Sinclair Of Swansea for £4-£7M
8: FD/AM: C Dempsey should be brought in swap deal with C Adams going the other way and with £2M also put in deal.
