The perfect solution to Liverpool’s most pressing transfer dilemma?

|

Whilst Liverpool’s transfer focus deserves to be placed on their attack (after the generally dismal showings in this area last season) let’s hope that this doesn’t come at the expense of necessary signings in defensive positions.

Daniel Agger, when he’s on the pitch, is a remarkable player. He’s easily one of the best defenders in the Premier League. He’s quick across the turf, times his tackles well and reads the game as well as just about anybody you’d care to name. The trouble is he’s always injured!

He’s entering the final two years of his contract and Liverpool have shown no signs that they’re going to offer him new terms. It looks like the club hierarchy may finally have got frustrated with his inability to hold down a first team place. This has led to speculation that Manchester City could sneak in and pluck up the talented but tainted defender (much like they did with Owen Hargreaves). (Source: Daily Mail).

Then there’s Martin Skrtel. Although Liverpool look to be keen to extend the bulky Slovakian’s contract, negotiations don’t look to be any closer to getting resolved. The player himself has found him linked to Manchester City (typical), Russian powerhouse Anzhi Machakala and Napoli. Brendan Rodger’s has already said, “I will fight as hard as I can to keep the players that I want here and Martin is one of them,” but who knows? (Source)

Suffice to say, Liverpool aren’t necessarily as secure at the back as some may care to think. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rodgers is seriously considering his options in the transfer market.

Which brings me to Liverpool’s link to PSG captain Mamadou Sakho. The Frenchman is a strong, athletic presence. In some ways, I view him as a combination of both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel. So wouldn’t he be the perfect signing for the Reds? He’s a fantastic player and at 22-years-old, he’s only going to get better.

According to the Mail, Sakho’s agents have been offering him around Europe, following PSG’s purchase of Thiago Silva. Sakho’s form dropped off last season and it doesn’t look like he’s up to taking competition from one of the world’s best defenders.

That doesn’t mean, however, that he’s not good enough for Liverpool. In two-three years time, I see him being one of the world’s best. Unfortunately he’s not quite there yet. If he is being offered around, however, perhaps now’s the right time to snap him up. It’d solve Liverpool’s defensive difficulties and give them a great platform to build on going forward.

What’s your take? Would Sakho be a good addition at Anfield?

Sahko is a superb prospect and he’ll cost £12 -15m. If we’re loosing Agger and/or Skrtel we should sign him asap. Another centre-back we should go for is Simon Kjaer- Danish, 23, good on the ball and strong at the back, and apparently available for only £5m!

While I’d like Sakho at Liverpool will he really leave the cash rich and Champions League PSG for Liverpool as we are now? Very unlikely. And as for Kjaer he has one huge problem he’s slower than a snail, look at Euro 2012 Agger was far more impressive, that’s why we should keep him.

We should try & keep Agger as stability in central defence,if skrtel is sold Kajaer is Dane international partner for Agger & sahko can also do skrtels job

Shakho is among the best U23 CB in the world, who ‘ll only improve. I believe he has the prospect to be as good as Thuram. However, i don’t think BR ‘ll buy anyone from France, as long as he has opportunities in Swansea

Strictly speaking if the new system works 70% possession would mean having to win the ball back higher up the pitch CDM play a far more defensive role than CBs and wing backs just rip up the wing in a free role. So the centre back simply require long range passes and well basically a range of passing skills to greater extent that their stopping skills, Puyol and Pique are examples. So Skyrtel and Agger do not exactly best fit this mould do they? Carrager even less so change is needed in at least one CB position.
