Is there still a place for Aaron Ramsey in this Arsenal side?

I wish I had the inside track on Arsenal midfielder, and all round bad-luck magnet, Aaron Ramsey’s mind. There’s no doubting that he’s a player of some quality, with talent to burn. Equally, however, there’s no doubting that he’s still got a lot to prove. The fans know it, the pundits know it and more importantly, he knows it. It must thus be devastating for him to see Arsenal being linked to midfielders of such quality. (Here’s who I’m referring to)

Whilst the arrival of Santi Cazorla from Malaga will do little to threaten Aaron Ramsey’s position in the squad, Nuri Sahin could end up providing some real competition. Is Aaron Ramsey up to the challenge?

The truth is that he’s struggled since his well documented Ryan Shawcross inflicted injury. He’s often looked like a player lacking in nerve. His passing game and finishing have been affected massively. I think Arsenal fans have expected too much from him too soon.

If Arsenal do sign Nuri Sahin (on loan as it may well be) their midfield will be ridiculously congested. When everybody is fit Arsenal have Abou Diaby, Mikel Arteta, Alex Song, Tomas Rosicky, Jack Wilshere, Emmanuel Frimpong, Henri Lansbury and Francis Coquelin, all with the quality and ability to hold down a place in a competitive midfield. It’s hard to see where Ramsey will fit in.

Of course, we need to consider that this is Arsenal we’re talking about and it’s unlikely that we’ll ever arrive at a situation where all of Wenger’s midfielders are fit.

Jack Wilshere has been out injured for over a year and he won’t feature in Wenger’s plan until at least October (Source: BBC). Expecting him to find his feet again quickly is a big ask. Then there’s perma-crocks Abou Diaby and Tomas Rosicky. Expecting them to be fit for longer than half a season is like expecting a rainless week in an English summer. You’ll only ever be let down.

Emmanuel Frimpong has his own injury problems and is still too raw. Alex Song’s future is uncertain given the links to Barcelona (Source: Daily Mail).

So yes, Arsenal’s midfield looks extremely crowded. In reality, however there’s a little more room here than at first appears. It’s my hope that Aaron Ramsey will thrive under the increased competition and start performing to the level that fans hope.

Aaron has looked pretty handy for Team GB (missed penalty aside). Maybe he’s realised that he’s come to a bit of a cross-roads in his career. I can’t wait to see him step up to the plate.

What’s your take? Will Ramsey prove himself next season?

    yes, piss off

I’ll say it again, Aaron Ramsey will be one of the best midfielders in the Premiership in the next couple of years.

Wenger can never have enough midfield players . However the new signings will only fit into his high-line attacking tactics , these have produced a lack of success since he has employed them – but despite this he is still obviously intent on trying to prove himself right again. Regarding the midfield situation Fabregas was top class and he’s still not been replaced.
Looks like deja vu Van Persie up front with Giroud his replacement being nowhere near the Dutchman’s class.
The main problems though are in defence , the goal keeper situation is not great and left back is a problem, and who are the two best centre backs? None of the current ones are good at defending on high balls and Mertesacker has all the turning speed of a old tug boat. So another s stressful season of abusing his plastic water bottle – and the poor hapless 4th official – awaits Arsene with his defensive frailties still being a big liability.

  • If posible dt w can get players like Arteta nd cazorla in our team,hw wud it posible for ramsey to still av jersy again even from bench it w hard for him.Unless may b carling cup game.gunnas till i fade.

    • Arjen says:

I hope you ‘fade’ soon as he will be Carzola’s understudy at the CAM posistion.Plus Carzola will eventually need a rest or we may need a change of attack who do we turn to RAMSEY.So think for once and please attempt to write full words before giving any of your GEMS of redundant advice.

No I think the Shawcross tackle has turned a great young prospect into a nervous edgy looking player that lacks confidence.I pray that he can overcome his problems ,but with the glut of midfield players we have I doubt whether his chance will comw at Arsenal

  • KC says:

I laughed out loud when I saw Lansbury’s name listed among our midfielders. He barely has a chance at staying at the club so how can he be one of the players crowding the midfield for Ramsey?

That was very poor analysis on your part. Lansbury sat on the bench in the Championship, and you somehow think he’s a viable option at Arsenal.

    He’s nowhere near Arsenal quality…!

When everybody’s fit,i thought the midfield trio would be alex song,arteta/diaby,and jack/rosicky. Ramsey,Frimpong,Coq,and others have to wait for their chances. At times, both jack n Rosicky are injured,so probably there’s a chance for ramsey. Nevertheless, considering his last season campaign n the imminent arrival of santi cazorla,it certainly won’t be easy for ramsey. IMO. wenger will plot Diaby as our CAM while we’re waiting for Rossa n Jack. Santi Cazorla may start too,but we know wenger doesn’t usually start the new comers at the start of the season.
