It’s a new day, which can only mean one thing: Liverpool will have been linked in some capacity to a winger of varying talent and ability. Today is no different and Aaron Lennon is the latest name to join the list of wingers linked with a potential move to Liverpool. According to a number of sources the Reds have made Lennon a key target and are preparing to launch a £20m bid for his services.

Whilst links with the likes of Juan Mata and Alexis Sanchez may represent more exciting prospects for the club, the potential signing of Lennon from Tottenham does seem more in line with Kenny Dalglish’s transfer dealings this summer. He’s currently plucking up all available British talent and Lennon ticks both boxes given that he was born in Leeds and is fairly handy with the ball at his feet.

What’s more, there were rumours throughout last season that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp and Aaron Lennon had had a falling out (these disputes were said to have culminated with Lennon’s no-show for Spurs’ 4-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the Champion’s League). Whether there’s any truth to these claims remains to be seen, but it may well be the case that Tottenham are prepared to sell Lennon, should the right bid come in.

The question that we ought to ask ourselves, however: Should Liverpool really pursue Aaron Lennon?

A season or two ago he looked to be the real deal. He had (and still has to some degree) pace, directness and an ability to beat players that made him a genuine threat down the wings. However, last season must have been something of a disappointment for Lennon. He never really found his best form and probably didn’t get as much game time as he would have hoped for.

In fairness, there’s every chance that his form suffered as he was still recovering from an injury he picked up the season previous, but his transfer would still represent a gamble for Liverpool. Despite flashes of his old self last season, what if he never again finds his best form?

Given that Liverpool need players who can cross the ball and provide Andy Carroll with service, I’d argue that Lennon isn’t the best option. He’s hardly renowned for his crossing and he’s somewhat inconsistent in the final third.

What’s more, there’s the £20m price-tag that’s been slapped unto Lennon’s head. That evaluation seems to me to be way off the mark, especially when you consider that Wigan’s Charles N’Zogbia is available for half the price and is arguably an equally good option.

As things stand, I’d much rather see Stewart Downing as a Liverpool player than Lennon. I just hope that Kenny Dalglish makes the right decision or that Tottenham price him out the market.

20M for Lennon is way of the mark while Liverpool paid the same price for Hendersson?????

  • Kurt says:

Completely disagree, Lennon is the best winger in the country and his flashes of brilliance is what will win Liverpool games next year, I’d value him higher than 20 million

i hope one day, that we can get rid of stupid sites like this one

  • gfergo says:

i do agree, lennon might well be the fastest winger in the prem, BUT thats were the good work stops he cant cross shoot or pass his end product is mostly disappointing, downing on the other hand may not be as eye catching but he takes his chances well and is a team player his crosses are spot on, and he has never slated the city of liverpool unlike lennon

Lennon has an Attitude problem at times, and let him self down in some games of last season, when his work rate was shocking,he didn’t close down or track back, he seem to loose his confidence when Bale hit form, which was a real shame cos when he’s playing at he’s best he is Awesome . He is super fast, has excellent feet, and can “Cross The Ball”,so i wouldn’t like to see Lennon leave he’s a one off, and we need the little man at the lane, Liverpool you stick with Donkey Downing, and Comolli jog on!!! THFC..

    • alan says:

stick with donkey downing? ithink that u’ll find that ur team only got europa at the end of the season after we were 4 points from relegation material and we chucked it to concentrate on the lague next year, spurs are a feeder club end of story, i challenge u to comeback in 2 years and spouturmouth off like ur somethin good mr modric

He is a good sprinter, average footballer. Every English Footballer (Actually sportsmen) are super hyped by media, if remotely successful. I don’t think had Lennon not been English, he would have been even half of 20mn. What ‘ll he offer better than Johnson?

English football is lacking creativity & skill big time; they are more of a workman like team. Had Rooney not been a MU player, I would have said that, over the last 15 years of my memory, EPL winners have come entirely from the creativity of non English players

  • Duck says:

@gfergo can’t shoot you say, I seem to remember him scoring the winner against Liverpool this season

  • davspurs says:

There is some fans on here who must need milk bottle specks Lennon cat cross and there is no end product ae you tyng to convince Spurs to sell him or is it because you now deep down he wont be sold. He did score the winner remember aginst Liverpool adn made the winner against Milan so call him but i will bet any Liverpool fan he will score at Liverpool but in a Spurs shirt not Yours dram on you payed 20 million for a player who in three games for the under 21 couldn’t pass had no starting product no finishing product and finally got hooked to save him more embarrassment 20 million at 14 he is worth 25 to 30 of any ones money. DAVSPURS from Widnes Lennon is staying and Comoli will bankrupt you buying shite who next Barton
