Cesc Fabregas has courted Barcelona for the last couple of seasons. Is the time right him to make a move? After weeks of rumour-mongering and empty talk regarding Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas it was recently revealed that Arsenal would be willing to sell their talismanic Captain – but only for the right price. Whilst that’s not all too surprising (I’m sure most Arsenal fans expected this to be the case) it is official recognition that Cesc Fabregas’ Arsenal days may be numbered.

According to the BBC, a senior Arsenal official told reporters that Barcelona had made an offer in writing for Cesc Fabregas to chief executive Ivan Gazidis and that “we said no straight away”. When questioned as to whether he thought Barcelona would make another attempt at acquiring Fabregas’ signature he responded: “Possibly. If it’s enough I expect we’ll have to sell”.

Given that most of Arsenal’s transfer dealings occur behind closed doors, it’s a little surprising that an ‘Arsenal official’ would go public with this kind of information. Regardless, I think this news does little to change what’s already an overcomplicated situation and certainly won’t weaken the Gunner’s negotiating power.

After all, hasn’t it always been the case that if the right offer from Barcelona came in, Arsenal would be prepared to sell? The trouble always arises from Barcelona’s unwillingness to fairly evaluate Cesc Fabregas and his worth to Arsenal.

Barcelona’s latest bid was reported to have been around £27m. Consider that for a moment: £20m for Jordan Henderson. £17m for Ashley Young. £20m for Phil Jones. £27m for Cesc Fabregas? That’s just preposterous and in the current transfer climate it just doesn’t stack up. He’s one of the best midfielders in European footballer, he’s proven himself over a series of seasons and he’s still got plenty of time left on his contract.

Despite admitting that they could be forced to sell Fabregas that won’t stop Arsenal from taking the hard line when it comes to his transfer fee. In fact, given his importance to the team, it’s absolutely imperative they sell him for the right price, so that the funds can be relocated into improving the team in his absence.

Arsenal fans have known for quite some time that Cesc would end up a Barcelona player one day. With the rise of Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey through the ranks, the loss of Fabregas wouldn’t necessarily be the worst thing in the world. If reports are true that suggest he’s become discontented with Arsenal’s attitude to his transfer (and I’d take these reports with a pinch of salt as he seems to be a consummate professional) then perhaps it’s for the best that he leaves this summer.

If Arsenal sell for anything less than £40-45m there will be plenty of furious fans – fans who have seen ticket prices rise once more this year. In essence: despite the admission that they are willing to sell Arsenal must, and will, remain as strong in the transfer market as ever.
