Why Tottenham can’t afford to put their faith in this experienced Brit

Tottenham have been linked to David Beckham in some form or another for the last season or so and it seems that Harry Redknapp may still have some vestigial interest in bringing the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid man to White Hart Lane. In all likelihood nothing will ever be made of Tottenham’s vague interest, which let’s face it would be best for Tottenham. David Beckham joining Spurs is something that would only be of benefit to David Beckham and not to the North London side.

The story comes from The News of the World (so take it with a rather large pinch of salt) who say: “Tottenham have still not given up hope of signing David Beckham when his Los Angeles Galaxy contract expires in November.”

It’s frustrating from a Tottenham point of view because it would represent such an unnecessary transfer. Spurs’ focus for the last couple of seasons has been to load the wings with pace and David Beckham would counterbalance this in a big way.

Tottenham need to add a couple of decent strikers to their squad this summer and there just isn’t the time to mess around with a signing such as this. Not so long ago Tottenham were linked with Luis Figo during every transfer window but no move ever materialised. David Beckham’s link with Tottenham seems to be an analogous case. A player past his prime linked to a club that aren’t realistically going to make a real move for him.

At 36 Beckham’s best days are pretty far behind him and he just wouldn’t be worth the money he’d bring in from shirt sales.

David Beckham is desperately hunting for more England caps and if he’s to have a chance of making Fabio Capello’s squad he’ll need to be performing week in and week out in the Premier League. At this stage, it’s fair to say that Beckham needs Tottenham more than they need him.

I just can’t see him making too much of an impact in this Tottenham team. I certainly can’t see him overtaking Aaron Lennon in the pecking order. Which raises the question: does Beckham seem like a man who’d be happy to play second fiddle to a younger player? I very much doubt it and for that reason amongst others, I hope that he doesn’t end up at White Hart Lane this summer.

Spurs should be looking towards the future, not the past. I’m sure Beckham can still offer alot, but unless he’s going to Spurs in a coaching capacity, then this makes no sense.

This is of course based on football sense. On the commercial side this makes perfect sense. He is the biggest name in the world football wise. If Spurs want to expand their commercial brand then I see no other person better than Team Beckham.

On the playing side, please stay away. In my honest opinion he doesn’t have the ability to play at this level anymore. If anything he will slow the game down. Having a player solely as a specialist is a luxury Spurs cannot afford.

Beckham has lots of skill but little pace, now.
The reasons I don’t want him at Spurs are:
    a) the media circus BUT ESPECIALLY
    b) he never, ever had any tactical nous. Frequently giving the ball away with very hopeful, long balls, when his side needed to be keeping possession for a while.

Let me start by saying i have always hated Beckham as a player his style is not to my taste.

That said, he is a “fight until the final whistle” player of Man utd breeding. Brought on as a sub for the last 20 mins i could see him have a fair few chances to get some of his trademark freekicks on target (something we sorely missed last season). A high percentage of corner and penalty conversions are also nice stats to add to a final third of a game.

    He shouldnt replace Lennon,

he shouldnt start games (but a juant into Europe could provide a few starts),

he shouldnt cost anything (levy likes),

he is worth his wieght in gold in terms of mercandise (levy likes)

he is old (levy dont like)

The circus he brings might overshadow the daily mail hate campaign and transfer circus that we cant shake.

He would take up a squad place,

He would pass on valuable knowledge and attitude!

Over all i’d say good deal, do it, or dont, this is just a blog, thats just how i feel right now, might not feel the same in the morning.

I agree that getting rid of our surplus players and signing a quality striker or two would probably take up all our efforts and time this window, not to mention the number of changes that would bring. We’d be ‘lucky?’ to ‘snap up’ Beckham on top of that nevermind any other signings. Not sure what to think on the likes of Beckham and Friedel. Hopefully this is Harry trying to sort out our seemingly not so good coaching team, in which case I applaud. Time will tell.

DAVID BECKHAM STILL HAS A LOT TO OFFER IF HARRY USES BECKHAM TO THE FULLEST I MEAN USE THE GUY THE WAY WE USED DAVID EDGAR , IF WE RESPECT HIS AGE THE WAY EDGAR WAS RESPECTED THE GUY BECKHAM COULD BE A GREAT WINNER FOR SPURS , DON`T FALL OUT OVER HIS WAGES MR LEVY COYS ! ! !
