Newcastle United have shown since their new owners took charge of the club that they are not shy when it comes to spending money to bring new players to St James’ Park.

The Magpies have also shown that they have a particular penchant for signing players from fellow English clubs.

Names such as Dan Burn, Nick Pope, Matt Targett, Chris Wood and most recently, Anthony Gordon, have all joined Newcastle from a variety of clubs.

One other Premier League figure that the Toon have been linked with that have not been able to get their hands on that we feel would be Eddie Howe’s dream transfer is James Maddison.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

Bearing in mind how the club have been linked with the Leicester City midfielder since the previous summer transfer window and were reported to be in talks to sign him in January, this showcases just how much they admire him.

After scoring 16 goals and supplying 13 assists in 53 senior appearances for Norwich City, the 26-year-old joined Leicester back in the 2018 summer transfer window in a deal worth a total fee of £24m.

Since then, the Englishman has gone on to make 187 appearances for the Foxes across all competitions, scoring 52 goals and providing 36 assists along the way.

Would you take James Maddison at Newcastle?

Maddison’s efforts for Brendan Rodgers’ side in the Premier League this season, which have been described as “extraordinary” by Gary Lineker, have shown why he’d be such an exciting signing for Howe and Newcastle.

For example, as their joint-top goalscorer (7) and assist provided (4), the £110k-per-week Englishman has the highest average of shots per game (2.9) and key passes per game (2.2) at Leicester.

In addition to that, his overall performances have earned him an impressive season rating of 7.29/10 from WhoScored, making him the 10th-highest-rated player in the entire division.

Taking all of this into account, if Newcastle can finally get their man and secure a transfer deal for the England international, this would surely be a star signing for the Toon and their manager.
