Newcastle United have reportedly had talks over a potential January transfer swoop for Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Having worked his way through the youth ranks at the Manchester club, the 26-year-old has made 194 senior appearances for United across all competitions, scoring 18 goals and delivering five assists along the way.

The Magpies were linked with a move for the Scotsman during the previous summer transfer window and despite not signing him in that period, they still have their eyes on the player.

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Newcastle have held conversations about a January move for McTominay, but are expected to wait until the summer with the Red Devils not looking to sell this month.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

The report also adds that Eddie Howe is a fan of the midfielder due to his athleticism and ball-carrying ability.

In terms of a potential move for McTominay in the summer, United’s stance on their Scottish midfielder could be re-evaluated given Newcastle’s consistent interest in the player and the fact that they would need to sell players to increase their spending capacity.

Would you take Scott McTominay at Newcastle?

The Red Devils’ recent 3-2 defeat against league leaders Arsenal saw the midfielder show how much of a capable figure he is, particularly from a defensive point of view.

For example, with the full 90 minutes under his belt, McTominay ended up winning six of the seven duels he was involved in as well as making nine clearances, four tackles and not getting dribbles past on even one occasion.

This display ultimately earned the midfielder a solid match rating of 7.2/10 from SofaScore, making him the second-highest rated United player on the day.

Described as a “destroyer” on the pitch by Danny Murphy, the ¬£60k-per-week United figure could be an ideal replacement for current Toon midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, who is set to see his contract expire at the end of the season and has recently been linked with a move away from the club.
