Aston Villa correspondent Ashley Preece has said that Lucas Digne will not need surgery on the shoulder injury that he suffered against Leeds United.

The 29-year-old made his 17th appearance of the season in all competitions last Friday, but he had to be replaced early in the match by January signing Alex Moreno.

Hailed as a ‘superb signing‘ last year by journalist Josh Bunting, Digne appeared to fall awkwardly after being caught in possession, with Unai Emery’s side going on to win 2-1 at Villa Park.

Some may have been fearing the worst after the Frenchman left the pitch with his arm raised, but Preece has shared a positive update regarding the player’s condition.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning, the Birmingham Live journalist said that Digne doesn’t require surgery, stating: “I’m told there’s no surgery for Lucas Digne’s shoulder which is good news.”

TIF thoughts on Digne update…

Knowing that Digne won’t need surgery is certainly good news, as Preece mentions, but the 29-year-old is likely to miss this weekend’s trip to Southampton, targeting a return against Leicester City on February 4.

Therefore, you’d expect that Villa will hand Moreno a first start, with the new addition impressing against Leeds.

Moreno currently tops the charts in Villa’s WhoScored average match rating in the Premier League, albeit from one appearance, so Emery will be hoping that his compatriot can back up his promising debut with another positive performance against the Saints.
