Journalist David Ornstein has claimed that Victor Orta is a ‘massive fan’ of Leeds United transfer target Matheus Cunha.

Leeds have recently been linked with a move for the Brazilian forward, with Mundo Deportivo reporting that the Whites have expressed an ‘interest’ in the 23-year-old.

Atletico Madrid are said to value the striker at between €30-35m (£26-30m), which is perhaps a reasonable price considering he is under contract until 2026.

He arrived in the Spanish capital for a similar price just last summer, but his game time has been limited and he could well be targeted by Leeds.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, as relayed by LeedsAllOver, Ornstein said: “Victor Orta, their DoF, is a massive fan of his. Jesse Marsch, the LUFC head coach, worked with him at RB Leipzig.

“Leeds want a striker and their financial situation is presumably capable of pulling this off.”

Having also previously played under Jesse Marsch at RB Leipzig, Orta’s fondness of the eight-cap Brazil ace could be another driving force behind this potential deal.

Cunha has only started 11 games for Atleti since the start of last season but has been directly involved in 15 goals despite his restricted minutes.

However, Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui has confirmed the Molineux outfit are also keeping an eye on his situation (El Larguero via Fabrizio Romano).

That could scupper Orta’s plans, but it will be interesting to see if he can pull off a deal.
