Journalist Tony Scott has claimed that he can’t see Everton signing reported summer targets Cody Gakpo or Mohammed Kudus this January.
Both players have taken this winter’s World Cup by storm, but it appears that Everton had noticed their ability way before the tournament kicked off as they were linked with moves for the pair over the summer.
Kudus was seemingly the closest one as the player was reportedly keen on a move to Goodison Park, only for Ajax to block any potential deal after they sold Antony to Manchester United – and now the Toffees may not get another opportunity to land him.
Scott believes the same applies to Gakpo, as he spoke on the All Together Now podcast about the likelihood of either joining Everton in the future.
He said: “Everton have been heavily linked pre-transfer window with Mohammed Kudus of Ajax and Cody Gakpo as well, who’s also banging them in for the Netherlands in the World Cup as well, so we’ve got two potential targets that Everton were looking at before the window.
Who would you rather Everton signed?
Gakpo!
Kudus!
“They are ripping it up in the World Cup. It seems very unlikely now Everton will get their services because there will be bigger clubs on alert because they’re doing so well and successful in the World Cup.”
TIF Thoughts on Everton’s interest in Gakpo and Kudus…
Their failed pursuit of Kudus reportedly had nothing to do with Everton pulling out or not forking out for the player, as Ajax were simply not willing sellers at the end of the window, which will likely make it a more difficult pill to swallow to watch him thrive with Ghana.
However, Gakpo is the one Everton may be kicking themselves over as they never appeared to seriously go after the Dutch attacker, and now seeing him tear it up in the Eredivisie and the World Cup will be a huge kick in the teeth.
Gakpo has also been linked to Manchester United more recently, with the winger requiring clubs to bid more than £43m for him, which would certainly blow Everton out of the water and leave them back at square one when it comes to attacking targets.
