BBC pundit Chris Sutton has slammed Everton star Jordan Pickford for letting in a goal as England were knocked out of the World Cup.

Over the weekend, the Three Lions’ hopes of winning football’s biggest prize sadly came to an end as they lost 2-1 to France. Aurelien Tchouameni opened the scoring before Harry Kane equalised. However, Olivier Giroud then put his team in front again and that was enough to see the win after Kane later blazed over his second penalty of the night.

While speaking about the defeat on BBC Radio 5’s 606, though, Sutton claimed that Pickford should have done better for the opening goal. Tchouameni’s effort was scored from at least 25 yards and the Everton goalkeeper failed to reach out and make the save.

When reflecting on this incident, the pundit seemed to think he wouldn’t be alone in feeling as though the effort should have been stopped.

TIF Thoughts on Jordan Pickford and Everton…

While it was certainly a clean strike from Tchouameni, questions will always be asked of a goalkeeper when they are beaten from such a long way out. And to be fair, you can’t help but feel as though he could have perhaps moved his feet a little quicker to get across, especially as the ball didn’t go perfectly into the bottom corner.

Pundit Roy Keane also wasn’t convinced by Pickford. Indeed, he said (via Daily Star): “Brilliant strike, ‘keeper? Can he do better? Yeah, I think so.”

According to Sofascore, that was Pickford’s second-worst performance of the tournament, but he was otherwise very good throughout the World Cup, keeping clean sheets in the three games prior.

However, he sadly fell short at this hurdle and will now return to Everton, who face their own struggles in the Premier League, currently sitting just one place above the relegation zone.
