Alex Iwobi is set to sign a new contract at Everton, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Nigerian midfielder has been in excellent form under Frank Lampard this season, playing in a midfield role rather than on the wings, and is about to sign fresh terms to stay at Goodison Park.
The 26-year-old has started every single Premier League match this campaign and has provided five assists in 15 appearances.
Iwobi was a much-maligned figure for a lot of his Everton tenure following his £34m move from Arsenal in 2019, but has become a fan favourite in his new position and a shining light in an otherwise poor season for the club.
Speaking on The Here We Go Podcast, Romano confirmed that he is soon set to sign a new deal, with his current contract running out in 2024.
Romano stated: “Alex Iwobi is set to sign a new deal with Everton. Soon [it] will happen, there are the final details to be sorted between all parties; it will be a deal until 2026.
“Iwobi is prepared to say yes to Everton.”
TIF Thoughts on Iwobi…
A new contract is well-deserved given Iwobi’s improvement this season, and over a year ago this may not have even been considered.
Lampard has spoken about why he changed Iwobi’s position, claiming that a midfield role suited his attributes more.
“Alex came and played as a winger when I first got here, then in midfield as a necessity, you’re thinking what has he got? Loads of energy and can handle the ball, let’s see if he can go in midfield,” Lampard stated.
There is no doubt that he is now a much more valuable asset to Everton than before, and securing his future is a smart move by the club as he heads into his prime years.
