Sunderland could now see star striker Ross Stewart depart Wearside within the next two years.

This has been suggested by journalist James Copley, who has been speaking on the latest edition of The Roar podcast to discuss the upcoming January window.

Tony Mowbray’s side made the perfect return to action at the weekend with an emphatic 3-0 victory over play-off hopefuls Millwall.

Where was Declan John loaned in from?

And they did so without main dangerman Stewart in front of goal, who has now been out of action since September having torn his thigh.

Despite his absence, Mowbray’s men sit just one point adrift of the top six, with Stewart believed to be edging closer to a return to action in the new year. However, Copley fears his time on Wearside may be over soon with his contract winding down.

He said: “With Stewart, we know his contract has the option of another year in the summer, so he’s going to be here, you would think – unless a big bid comes in for him and Sunderland sell him.

“Obviously, him signing a new deal is very much up in the air. There’s a possibility that Stewart could leave within the next 18 months to 2 years, so you would really want his replacement there.”

TIF Thoughts on Copley’s comments…

As Copley mentions, the Black Cats have the option to extend Stewart’s stay at the Stadium of Light, and having been such an influential player over the last couple of years, you’d imagine they’ll take that up.

Are you worried about Stewart's future at SOL?

Stewart really shone last season in League One and the early signs were promising in the Championship after an impressive return of five goals in seven appearances (via Transfermarkt).

However, with his long-term future not secure at Sunderland and Ellis Simms still only a season-long loan deal for Everton, it does leave a sense of uncertainty for Mowbray’s side.

Given Sunderland had their struggles without the pair whilst they were both sidelined through injury, we think it would be silly for Kristjaan Speakman not to consider his options with a long-term vision in mind.
