Pundit Frank McAvennie believes Alfredo Morelos will leave Rangers on a free transfer in the summer as he enters the final six months of his contract.

Morelos has struggled this season at Ibrox, with him bagging just three goals in 19 games and only starting one SPFL game all campaign.

His huge drop-off in form, paired with his £33k-per-week deal expiring at the end of the season, could spell the end for the Colombian at Ibrox, with McAvennie suggesting to Football Insider that he doesn’t hold the same esteem as previous campaigns.

He said: “Morelos will leave for free and he will not get any club.

“The Morelos of last year in the Europa League is gone. I do not think the guy has got it in him to get that back. He was a predator, he was an unbelievably good player. He was their talisman.

“There [are] two ways it can work. One way, he comes back and works his socks off to get that move, which I think is disrespectful to the fans because they know you are only doing it to get a move.

“Or, he can go and work his socks off so that Rangers can sell him because he is going to move.”

TIF Thoughts on McAvennie’s comments…

The 26-year-old does look a complete shadow of the player he’s been over the years at Ibrox, where he’s scored 115 times with 52 assists in 243 games.

But his dismal displays this year have left him as the third-worst Gers player who’s played over 100 minutes according to WhoScored, with an average rating of 6.36.

His stint in Glasgow certainly seems to have fallen flat, with a move to pastures new seemingly the only alternative – unless new boss Michael Beale can unlock his previous form from when the pair were part of the title-winning side in the 2020/21 season.

That campaign was one of Morelos’ most successful, as he registered 30 goal contributions in 44 games across all competitions as the Gers finished unbeaten in the league, with the Colombian scoring against Celtic to cap a marvellous season, so it’s a sad situation for a Rangers icon.
