Phil Smith was left very impressed by what he saw from Danny Batth during Sunderland’s latest victory.

Sunderland got the Championship action back underway with a bang on Saturday recording an emphatic 3-0 win over fellow play-off hopefuls Millwall and Smith was left impressed by the performance of January signing Batth.

The veteran centre-back was signed by Lee Johnson back in January on an 18-month deal and has certainly fit in very well having featured regularly under three different managers and stood out on Saturday as he helped keep a clean sheet.

And on a day when Amad Diallo shone, Smith was certainly blown away by Batth, not just on Saturday, but since arriving at Sunderland as he spoke about on the Sunderland Echo YouTube channel.

Will Sunderland make the Play-Offs?

“Danny Batth, what a signing he’s been for Sunderland, it was interesting that Tony Mowbray brought him up without even being asked, pretty much straight away in his press conference he said we need to give a special mention to Danny Batth.

“Millwall scored 63% of their goals so far this season from set plays and yet Batth headed everything away he was immense.”

TIF Thoughts on Batth…

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

It was quite impressive on Saturday for Sunderland to not only keep out Millwall but also to restrict them from set pieces as they are leading the league in terms of goals from dead-ball situations and Batth was clearly a big part of that.

At 6’2″, Batth was always going to have a big role to play against Millwall and he played that role very effectively which will have pleased Mowbray, especially after not playing competitive football for a number of weeks.
