Tottenham Hotspur right wing-back Matt Doherty has identified Jonathan David as a player to watch in the World Cup amid some transfer links to the Lilywhites.

The Irishman has been speaking to the club’s website during his World Cup break to discuss the upcoming games in Qatar and it is apparent he has an eye on the Lille striker.

The Canadian striker faced Belgium on Wednesday night as the Maple Leafs found themselves on the end of a disappointing 1-0 defeat.

However, it was a bright display from John Herdman’s side but David was unable to capitalise on Canada’s dominance with all three of his shots failing to hit the target (via SofaScore).

Spurs have been linked with the 22-year-old striker who is also believed to be on the radar of a number of other Premier League sides.

And it seems as if the Canadian is attracting the attention of fellow players across Europe with Doherty picking him out as his player to watch on Wednesday:

“I’d go for Jonathan David of Canada. He plays for Lille and has scored a lot of goals in the last few seasons. It will be interesting to see how he gets on against the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen, quality defenders, so he’s my player to watch.”

TIF Thoughts on Doherty’s comments…

We are slightly surprised the Lille striker was not allowed to take the first-half penalty which Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies failed to convert.

David has been in fine form in Ligue 1 with nine goals and three assists already to his name so it is a surprise not to see him given the responsibility of taking the spot kick.

However, despite his underwhelming performance on Wednesday night, it is apparent this is a player with a lot of potential having scored double figures in the last of his three league campaigns (via SofaScore).

And at the age of just 22, there could definitely be a case made for him potentially being a long-term option for Spurs as Harry Kane nears the age of 30.
