Alasdair Gold has dropped a big update on Tottenham Hotspur’s expected January transfer business following their Champions League success.
Spurs enjoyed a memorable and exciting night out in France on Tuesday evening as they secured their progression to the knockout stages of the Champions League, as well as topping their group thanks to a late Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg winner.
Antonio Conte has not made his feeling unknown recently in regard to wanting signings in January despite eight new faces coming through the door over the summer, but the winter window will likely be very different to the summer market.
This is because Gold has claimed on his YouTube channel that Spurs will target quality over quantity in the new year.
He said: “From what I understand, the January transfer window is going to be purely focused on that quality side. So as a whole, they don’t really want a bloated squad, they don’t want more than they’ve currently got, which is roughly two for each position apart from right wing-back, where there’s about 75 players that can play there, and still Ivan Perisic plays there…
Will Spurs back Conte in January?
“Now it’s about changing the pieces and saying, we’ve got two people in that position but we could let one of them go and we could try and upgrade them, and that’s what it’s about.”
TIF Thoughts on Spurs’ January transfer business…
If Tottenham find themselves in the top three of the Premier League going into the January transfer window, accompanied by Champions League football, it will surely make signing top-class players a lot easier.
Players will want to come and play for a team that are flying high and coached by a manager who’s got a great habit of picking up silverware wherever he goes – especially in his last three jobs, in Conte’s case.
But as Gold spoke about, it has to be quality arrivals rather than players being brought in just to make up the numbers, as it’s pretty clear Conte doesn’t want that – with perhaps the best example being Djed Spence, who has been handed just four minutes of league action all season.
