Newcastle United transfer target James Maddison has spoken about the banter he’s recently had with the Toon players while on England duty.

Maddison was a transfer target for Newcastle over the summer and ranked near the top of the club’s priority list having seen two bids come in for him, although they were both rejected.

Now though, Maddison could have his head turned while on international duty as he’s in the England camp with Newcastle trio Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, who have seemingly been talking about the summer links.

Maddison was a guest on The Lions’ Den YouTube show and spoke about the recent banter he’s been having and even mentioned the summer rumours.

Do you want Newcastle to sign Maddison?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

He said: “We’ve been having a bit of banter about the Boxing Day game coming up and stuff, and obviously there was a bit of speculation last summer, so it’s been good fun, banter as you’d expect from the lads.”

TIF Thoughts on James Maddison…

There’s no surprise that Newcastle were keen on landing Maddison over the summer, as since the start of last season he’s managed to register 31 goal involvements in the Premier League alone, so he would certainly add some more creativity to an already free-flowing Newcastle side.

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

However, given how important he is to Leicester City, it would be ever difficult to envisage them willingly selling the midfielder in January, so the ‘banter’ from Newcastle players could yet be what plants the seed in his mind to force through a mid-season exit.

The fact that Maddison even mentioned the speculation without being prompted to talk about it would suggest that it is clearly on his mind and a hot topic of discussion amongst his teammates, so it wouldn’t come as a huge shock to see him turning out in the famous black and white shirt in the near future with just 18 months left on his contract come January.
