Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was fully aware of his situation ahead of his sacking on Thursday night after not being able to string together results.
This has been suggested by the Sky Sports pundit and former teammate of Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, who has been speaking about the 42-year-old’s departure.
It has been an incredibly underwhelming start to the 2022/23 campaign for Villa as they find themselves slumped in 17th spot in the mix of the relegation battle.
Attention now turns to finding a replacement for Gerrard with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Ruben Amorim already linked with the job at Villa Park.
But with Villa making such a poor start to the season after a busy summer of transfers, Carragher claims there was a feeling of inevitability on Gerrard’s side if the results didn’t improve:
“I spoke to him a few days ago actually about, you know, the upcoming games for Aston Villa. And as I said, he’s not daft he knows the situation.
“But it’ll be really interesting. That’s not something I’ve spoke to him about whether he’s the type of guy who wants to be sort of a manager for the next 20 years or maybe almost picks certain jobs that really appealed to him.”
TIF Thoughts on Carragher’s comments…
It was certainly apparent from Gerrard’s comments after the game that he was aware of his situation with the former Rangers manager dejected in his post-game comments.
Was Gerrard given enough time at Villa?
Yes
No
Gerrard had been there for around 11 months and with a 14th-place finish under his belt last season, there will have been hope the money invested over the summer would see an immediate improvement.
However, that has clearly not been the case with Villa among the league’s bottom scorers with just seven goals and failing to keep a tight defence with 16 conceded at the other end.
