Ex-Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has admitted he expected to see more of Ridvan Yilmaz given the fee the Gers paid for him in the summer.

Yilmaz signed from Turkish giants Besiktas in a deal that could rise to £5.3m in add-ons in the recent transfer window.

However, he has made just four appearances for the Gers and has been handed just two starts by Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Borna Barisic has held down the left-back berth starting all but one of the club’s Scottish Premiership and Champions League games which has stunned Ferguson.

Speaking on the GO Radio Football Show when asked about Yilmaz he said:

“I’m surprised we’ve not seen much more of him. I don’t know whether he’s taking time to settle, he’s coming from a different country, he’s still young.

“But when you splash that kind of cash you are expecting if you’re not going to play at least force your way into the team and it looks to me like his no.1 left-back is Borna Barisic who, at this moment in time, isn’t playing at the levels that he has before with Rangers.”

TIF Thoughts on Yilmaz and Rangers…

Is Barisic good enough to be Rangers first-choice left-back?

At just 5′ 7″, Van Bronckhorst perhaps has concerns over the physicality of the six-time Turkey international but Wednesday night in the Premier Sports Cup seems like an opportune time to give him another 90 minutes.

The 21-year-old started the previous round against Queen of the South and recorded an assist in the 3-1 win leaving it likely that he keeps his place when the club compete in that competition.

It will be another chance for the one-time Turkish Super Lig winner to show what he is capable of and perhaps kickstart his Glasgow career.
