Rangers may feel they were let off with a potential red card for Leon King in their game on Sunday against Motherwell.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men left Fir Park on Sunday with all three points having secured a 2-1 win through goals from Malik Tilman and John Lundstram.

And they ended the game with all 11 men still on the pitch despite the challenge from King on Stuart McKinstry which saw the Rangers man handed a yellow card.

The Rangers defender found himself lunging in for a 50/50 ball with McKinstry but it was the Motherwell ace who got to the ball first.

This left King swiping through the 20-year-old who may have felt he was denied an opportunity on Allan McGregor’s goal and the footage was posted to Twitter as the debate continued.

TIF Thoughts on the footage…

There is definitely an attempt from King to play the ball and we do not think there is any malice in the challenge which saw King pick up his second yellow card of the campaign.

Should King have been shown a red card?

And it would be hard to suggest McKinstry was the last man with his touch taking the ball away from McGregor’s goal, leaving another two potential defenders able to catch up to the youngster had the foul not occurred.

However, it was apparent the Motherwell manager, Steven Hammell, was not impressed at all as he slammed King for endangering his 20-year-old star:

“I think it is a red card. Not for where it is on the pitch and where Stuart is going – that is up for debate – but I think the actual tackle in isolation is poor,” he said.

“I think he catches him high and there is a lot of force in it. I think Stuart is lucky not to come away with an injury on the back of it.”
