Wolverhampton Wanderers’ potential appointment of recently sacked Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui has been questioned.

That is by beIN Sports presenter Richard Keys, who was speaking on Keys & Gray: The Podcast about the latest Premier League news.

According to The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, Wolves are likely to appoint Lopetegui later this week, after the West Midlands club decided to sack Bruno Lage at the start of the month, after the side’s poor start to the season which has left them in the Premier League relegation zone after nine games.

Lopetegui was also sacked last week, but left Sevilla having won the Europa League with the La Liga side in 2020, as well as achieving three top-four finishes back-to-back.

But Keys has questioned as to why Wolves would want to appoint the former Real Madrid manager, with the Spaniard leaving Sevilla in 17th in La Liga at the time of his exit.

“Why would Wolves want to talk to Julen Lopetegui?” Keys asked on Keys & Gray: The Podcast (13:05).

“Just sacked, he’s just lost his job.

“I mean, you can’t judge always on just one failure, that’s maybe too strong a word, and he’s got quite the CV.”

TIF Thoughts on Keys’ comments

We believe that whilst Keys is entitled to question Wolves’ potential appointment, there are certainly more reasons in favour of the club appointing the Spaniard than reasons against.

The former Spain manager comes with a pedigree that the Black Country side have not seen before in terms of managerial appointments, having managed FC Porto, the Spanish national side, Real Madrid, and Sevilla, having particularly great success with the latter.

For this reason, we believe that Lopetegui would be a bit of a coup for Fosun if they were to secure his signature at Molineux, and therefore we are inclined to disagree with Keys questioning the appointment.
