Rúben Amorim would be “an amazing” appointment for Wolverhampton Wanderers, though it seems unlikely.

That is according to Talking Wolves’ Dave Azzopardi, who was speaking on a YouTube upload in discussion of Wolves’ next potential manager.

Fosun have been on the lookout for a new manager for the West Midlands club since the sacking of Bruno Lage at the beginning of October.

It is thought that Amorim is admired by Wolves, but it isn’t believed that at this moment in time he would leave his current head coach role at Sporting Lisbon.

And Azzopardi suggests as much, though he would be delighted if the club were to appoint the Portuguese manager.

Rúben Amorim of Sporting, [I would] be very surprised if Wolves pay the money to get him in, although that would be an amazing appointment,” Azzopardi said on Wednesday’s Talking Wolves upload.

Test your knowledge on Wolves' managerial candidates! First up: in what year did Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui almost take the Wolves hotseat?

TIF Thoughts on Azzopardi’s comments…

We agree with Azzopardi and believe that Amorim is currently the best option out there, in terms of realistic targets that Wolves could appoint at the moment.

However, the Sporting manager reportedly has a £25m release clause, which you can’t envisage the Black Country club spending at this moment in time, especially following the club’s spending of over £120m in transfer fees this summer.

And according to the Express & Star’s Liam Keen, Wolves are exploring the prospect of re-appointing former head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, who left the club in the summer of 2021 after four seasons at the helm of the club.

Therefore, we think that unfortunately for Wolves, the appointment of Amorim looks increasingly unlikely, especially with the other candidates that are being considered.

Lopetegui, Amorim, Martins, Edwards, Santo….. but what of Marcelo Gallardo, the current manager of River Plate in Argentina and previously manager of Nacional in Uruguay?
He is about to end his contract at River Plate this weekend after 10 years in the job and he has had a tremendous amount of success!
Would be a ‘risky’ appointment in that he has no experience outside of South America but Argentina is a hotbed of football where pressure is at its highest, so the PL would not faze him and being from a different continent would offer alternative ideas and tactics which may just make Wolves a successful team?
The big question is of course, would Fosun be tempted to take the gamble knowing that failure could see fans turn against them?
Not my money involved of course but I would go for Gallardo and see what happens.
