Journalist Josh Bunting has slammed Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal for his role in the club’s most recent defeat.

Spurs had a day to forget at home in front of their own fans this weekend as they fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Indeed, goals from Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron were enough to give the away team all three points on the day, despite Harry Kane netting what turned out to be only a consolation in the second half.

Tottenham certainly weren’t at their best but it seems as though Royal stood out, in particular, as he came in for some heavy criticism online from Bunting.

After the match, the journalist took to Twitter to say: “Emerson Royal just isn’t good enough at all, he’s not Premier League quality whatsoever. Dreadful performance again today, decision making and just general football intelligence is simply dreadful. Maybe the worst player to play for Tottenham in my lifetime and I mean that.”

How well do you remember Newcastle's January transfer window? An easy one to start with: where did Newcastle sign Bruno Guimaraes from?

TIF thoughts Emerson Royal and Tottenham…

It seems as though the statistics on SofaScore also back up what Bunting has said of this dismal display. Only Eric Dier lost the ball more times than Emerson’s 16 giveaways.

On top of that, the Brazilian also failed with all four of his attempted cross, made one foul, managed only one tackle, and won just half of his eight attempted duels.

Journalist Dan Kilpatrick echoed the sentiments of those poor stats, as he wrote for the Evening Standard: “Offered little in the final third in a hard-working performance which was short on quality.”

In his last Premier League outing, the wingback picked up a red card against Arsenal and has consequently missed the past three league games for Spurs. While he came right back into the team for this one, it’s not likely he keeps his place after that dismal outing.

Criticism doesn’t come much harder than what Bunting had to say. Still, after that display, it’s easy to see why Emerson has struggled to win much praise of late.

We have too many players like Emerson, Doherty, Lloris, Davies, Dier, Sessegnon, Sanchez, basically the whole defence needs upgrading, we are so poor at the back it will cost us again this season.

  • Ubaka onyekachukwu says:

Antonio conte time at spurs is coming to end with this his boring 3-5-2 formation. That formation is not getting the best out of our players.

  • Victor67 says:

Get Rid of fakes…Emerson Royal, Ben Davies and Dier. Spurs will wun NOTHING, with these 3 players non-productive , no ball sense type of players.
They seemed LOST at crucial moments.
    Stop playing them.
