Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has no intention to leave for Real Madrid – but the Spanish club have ‘always been monitoring him’.

Over the weekend, the Brazilian really caught the eye as he delivered a two-goal performance while the Magpies pulled off a superb 5-1 win in the Premier League.

After the game, Guimaraes claimed to have had a ‘conversation’ with Madrid over the possibility of a move and even called them the ‘best team in the world’, before saying the talk was ‘nothing’ and confirming his loyalty to Newcastle.

While speaking about the player’s latest comments on his YouTube channel, Romano provided viewers with his own knowledge of the situation.

He explained: “In an interview, he said today about Real Madrid links, ‘It is nothing at the moment, nothing concrete. They are the best team in the world. But there’s nothing concrete. I’m focused on the Newcastle project.’

“And this is the truth. Because Bruno is really happy with the Newcastle project. About Real Madrid, we had rumours when they sold Casemiro to Manchester United because they are still looking for a midfielder for 2023.

“But with Bruno, they’ve always been monitoring him, but never had any official or concrete or advanced negotiations. So I will provide you updates on Bruno Guimaraes very soon on his future.”

Romano went on to state (3:27) that he feels as though Guimaraes could be worth as much as €80m (£70m), which is a stunning claim considering Newcastle paid just £33.3m plus around £6.5m in add-ons to Lyon back in January.

But seeing as he has settled into life in England so well – earning an impressive average SofaScore match rating of 7.57 in the league so far this term – Eddie Howe and co will have no intentions of selling their man any time soon.

Luckily, as made clear by Romano as well as the player, a possible exit certainly isn’t looking close at this moment in time despite Real Madrid’s interest. Still, with a team as big as that monitoring Guimaraes’ progress, this could be cause for concern one day in the not-too-distant future.
