The referee may have made a huge mistake in the most recent Newcastle United game by not awarding Callum Wilson a penalty against Tottenham.

The Magpies’ quest to break into the top six in the Premier League this season was given a big boost over the weekend as Eddie Howe’s men claimed a key win over one of the club’s rivals.

Indeed, travelling away to Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle lifted themselves into the top four with a 2-1 win courtesy of goals from Wilson and Miguel Almiron.

Despite the victory, the Magpies could have picked up a more comfortable win had Clement Lenglet been penalised when he appeared to kick Wilson in the box, which could have led to a penalty.

TIF Thoughts on the decision and Newcastle…

The image clearly shows that after Wilson attempts his volley, Lenglet comes in late to try and block the shot and leaves his studs on the NUFC forward.

However, the referee did not spot the foul at the time and the VAR evidently did not deem it bad enough to get involved. Consequently, no penalty was given and the game remained 0-0 for a little while longer.

Of course, though, Newcastle and Wilson still managed to take the lead before the half-time break, and with Almiron doubling the score, Howe’s team came away with all three points, despite Harry Kane pulling one back for Spurs.

So while the Magpies won’t be losing too much sleep over the decision, this situation certainly could have been more costly had the result not gone their way – especially having been on the wrong side of such calls already this season.
