Journalist Graham Smyth has been left very unhappy upon learning that Leeds United will not be playing a game on Boxing Day this year.

Due to the winter World Cup that takes place in Qatar over November and December, football across the world, including the Premier League, will see their fixtures heavily impacted upon.

Indeed, the English top flight will take a break for that period with teams expected to return on December 26. However, while the Whites were scheduled to host Manchester City at Elland Road on Boxing Day, that fixture has now been moved two days later to December 28.

This is because it was been selected for live television broadcast by Amazon Prime. This has also led to another Leeds home game being moved. West Ham will now visit on January 4, having seen that match pushed back two days as well.

While reacting to the news on Twitter, Smyth certainly wasn’t happy as he wrote: “No game on Boxing Day is just so sh*t. They’re stealing our game from us.”

TIF thoughts on Leeds United…

The tradition of a Boxing Day fixture dates all the way back to 1860 when Sheffield FC and Hallam FC met on December 26. This was also the first-ever recorded derby (via Wowtickets).

Seeing as Leeds are another Yorkshire club, it’s easy to see why some fans and journalists will have a great fondness for watching their team play on this particular day of the year.

However, seeing as the way the Whites have been playing of late – they sit in the bottom three and have not won a game in their last eight – perhaps supporters will be glad to miss the game and not risk ruining their Christmas cheer.
