Leeds United have now been linked with a potential swoop for Mauricio Pochettino with Jesse Marsch now on the end of an eight-game run without a Premier League win.

The Daily Express has mooted the possibility of the Whites plumping for the Argentinian, while Sky Sports’ Jeff Stelling also hinted that he should be amongst those available for the vacancy.

However, speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, presenter Conor McGilligan has slammed such talk, with the ex-Spurs boss being out of Leeds’ reach.

Marsch remains the man in the dugout at Elland Road despite the poor run of form the Whites are enduring, which has them 18th in the Premier League table and level on points with bottom side Nottingham Forest.

Pochettino has now been out of work for a number of months following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, but there is a belief he is looking to take over a side playing Champions League football.

And McGilligan has suggested although bringing the 50-year-old to Yorkshire would be a massive statement, it is simply not a realistic possibility.

He said: “We should be able to pick up wins. It’s no guarantee in the Premier League, but why can’t it be a hope for Leeds? Why can’t we be in the Premier League and do things that other clubs can do of our size?

“Pochettino – I completely understand how that’s unrealistic. That’s unrealistic. We’ve been talking about Aston Villa – I’m just using them as an example because of Unai Emery, by the way.

“But your Pochettinos, I understand that he’s been at PSG. That’s a gargantuan appointment and a target if you were to go and try and get him for Leeds United, but why can’t we at least go for some top pedigrees in Europe?”

TIF Thoughts on McGilligan’s comments…

We have to agree with McGilligan. We cannot see a world where Pochettino would take on the current challenge of this Leeds team at this stage in his career.

Is Pochettino an unrealistic target?

No

There were reports Aston Villa were interested in the Argentine, but he swiftly rejected any potential notion of him making the move to Villa Park.

And it has to be said, Villa would likely appear a more attractive proposal than the Whites at the moment given the big financial backing from their owners.

It has also been suggested that Pochettino is holding out for a possible return to Spurs, so a relegation fight does not seem as if it would appeal to the man whose last job involved managing the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar.
