The referee may well have made a huge mistake in the most recent Everton defeat by not sending off Antony Gordon for a second bookable offence.

Frank Lampard’s men couldn’t come away with anything from St James’ Park last night, as they ended up being eased out 1-0.

In the end, Miguel Almiron’s brilliant strike was enough to settle the affair, handing the Magpies a narrow 1-0 win and sending Everton back home with nothing to show for all their efforts.

The Toffees can, however, consider themselves a touch lucky not to have seen on of their key players dismissed in the game though. Indeed, having already picked up a yellow card, Gordon then flew into a challenge on Newcastle’s Elliot Anderson.

The referee blew for the foul but did not deem it quite bad enough to be a second yellow card and so Gordon escaped without any further punishment – which seems to be rather fortunate.

TIF thoughts on Antony Gordon and Everton…

This incident comes after James Tarkowski threw himself into controversy by making a rash tackle on Ryan Fraser, which could’ve been deemed a red card offence.

On the live commentary for Sky Sports’ match coverage, pundit Lee Hendrie called Gordon a ‘very lucky boy’ and said he didn’t know ‘how on earth he’s got away with it’.

Seeing as Gordon already has six yellow cards to his name this season, and consequently missed the recent trip to Tottenham Hotspur, this does seem like a problem to perhaps work on.

Having scored two league goals for the team, he clearly can offer plenty to his team but he won’t be able to do that if he keeps getting himself suspended. On this occasion, the only thing that stopped him from being sent off was the mercy of the referee and so he consider himself lucky to be available for the club’s next game.
